useful little thing to have...

I sent the following E to Scot...

You can change startup options by going START/RUN/MSCONFIG and hitting
enter.

Click the "Selective Startup" button and then go to the STARTUP tab.
This will allow you to control what windows loads at startup. You will
not be able to create different profiles for different uses, but you can
stop conflicting programs from launching.

If nothing else, unclick duplicate entries. This has fixed some
problems that I had on my system.

If you "unclick" too many things you can create startup problems. At a
minimum you must have SYSTRAY and WINDOWS EXPLORER startup.

There is another option... Create multiple startup hardware profiles.
This is almost like having different options launch with different user
sign ons.

Go to MY COMPUTER on the desktop and right click. Go to Properties and
click the Hardware Profiles tab. First thing to do; copy the existing
profile to something like "backup" or "basic" or "original." This way
you can always return to the original setup.

Now make another copy, name it something useful like "WL in Contests" or
whatever. Restart the PC. You will be asked which profile you want to
start up. Choose whichever one you want to modify and once booted go
back to the Properties by right clicking MY COMPUTER. Now you can go to
the Device Manager tab and make changes.
