I AM GOING OUT ON A LIMB HERE THAT MAY BE CUTOFF. These are my opinions and
YMMV but here it is.

Perhaps your sound card has no line in. If it has no line in, use the
microphone input. That would be the one to adjust too.
If there is a line in on the card (many laptops do not have it and perhaps
some desk tops) then you have bad sound card software. Update it.

Keep trying and if you can decode PSK31or any other thing like SSTV then
you have ti set up exactly the way you want it to do the CW. The problem
may be partly that the CW decoder in WRITELOG is not very good. It requires
you to find a signal in a VERY NARROW range of speeds. If you do then it
decodes well as it does not have to worry about adjusting to speed.
I would not even begin to try to use this in a contest. It is worthless for
that in my opinion. IT is a nice toy, nothing more.

GET QUICKMIX to save your settings and quickly restore them once you have
them. IT IS FREE.

WriteLog is a good logging program but is far inferior as a demodulator for
all modes except rtty and is not even close to MMTTY in that mode either.

The PSK31 decoder is acceptable but barely as the width of the display
(FREQUENCY BANDWIDTH) is FAR too narrow. That is also pretty much true in RTTY.

FOR RTTY use MMTTY.
FOR SSB , nothing needed.
FOR PSK31 use the built in, it is all you have. Fortunately there are few
contests.
FOR CW use your head. It is FR superior to what you can do with WriteLog OR
ANY OTHER DECODER in a contest.
