I had a lightening strike over a year ago on the pole pig across the road.
I was looking our the window when it hit.  The UPS did not prevent
lightening damage to the computer, rig, etc.  At best they have a decent
surge protector.  A direct lightening strike on the power line into your
home IMHO is far more than what typical surge devices are intended to
protect from.  And, may you never have a direct hit.
