[WriteLog] KAM Transmit on RTTY?

Jay-

Jay-

Your post had some very interesting suggestions. This touches on a
question I have. During my go-around with the KAM+ dropping
characters--only with Writelog--we explored comport settings. A
programmer who helped out said that in most cases it does not matter
what is set in control panel because the application takes control of
the port and sets it to whatever it wants to see. In other words
whatever rate you expect Writelog to communicate with the KAM at is set
by Writelog (however you have configured it) which overwrites whatever
is shown in control panel. He said the values set in control panel are
defaults to cover the case where an application program does not set up
the port.

So here are my questions:

1) Is the programmer's info--or my understanding of it-- correct?
2) If an application program does not reset some of the default
parameters, say the FIFO settings, are these left set the way Windows
shows them in Control Panel?

By the way I saw a post suggesting RFI might be responsible for
character dropping. RF in the shack can do some strange things but was
not the culprit in my case. Working through the possibilities we had
turned output power down to about 200mw with no change in behavior.

A couple of other things to check are under Windows Control Panel.
Serial
Devices. Both the FLOW Control and in particular under the advanced TAB
the
FIFO settings. Use NO FIFO instead of a high number. I would suggest
trying HARDWARE and/or XON instead of
none under FLOW.

The reason its dropping char's is most likely a timing issue as the KAM
has
a bunch of overhead and if you have too much buffering it will never
catch
up. My old KAGOLD manual suggests that hardware lines need to be
configured. That's what Don is I'm sure talking about in his cable
discussion. 3 wire serial hookup is not adaquete for the KAM. You need
1-8
and 20. You can assert CTS by installing a 5K resistor between pin 4 and
pin 5.
