Below is a message I posted on another reflector recently.  Although not
directly related to your soundcard issue, missing or corrupted chipset
support software can also prevent the OS from properly finding and
installing the sound card.  The message was directed at Win98(SE) users, but
it also applies to Windows 2000.

Make sure to load all chipset specific support software immediately after
loading Win98SE (before loading anything else).  Without the chipset support
software, Windows does not know how to directly handle chipset specific
functions - these include I/O (IDE, PCI, AGP) and Power Management.
Instead, it relies on BIOS calls to handle these functions.  Most BIOS's
support APM, but Win98SE supports the newer (and much better) ACPI.  Without
the chipset support software, ACPI is usually not available.  This is
critical to proper operation of all power management functionality.

Check with the motherboard manufacturer's website to download the chipset
support software for your motherboard.  If they don't have anything, the
most common chipsets are manufactured by Intel and VIA.  Both companies have
the .INF updates required for basic chipset support, but the motherboard may
have additional 3rd party I/O devices.

about chipset specific support.  Search the archives or e-mail me direct...I
