Wayne,
Grid squares are used in contests above 30Mhz, generally four characters
(ie, FN31) at VHF and six characters at UHF (FN31FE). Direction, using Grid
Squares can be calculated by formula.
I don't know how you would use domestic (USA) Callsigns for bearing and
distance without looking up Latitude and longitude on a callbook database.
In any event, bearing and distance for a domestic HF contest would be of
marginal utility.
