That sounds pretty good to me, although I can't personally confirm the Live
5.1 card. This is sure a popular subject, seeing over 5000 hits on my
soundcard survey at http://www.qsl.net/wa9als/sound_results.htm. I see
entries for the LIVE Platinum 5.1 (7f), LIVE Value Digital (7b), LIVE
Digital (7f), LIVE (7b), and LIVE 1024 (7f), and the venerable Soundblaster
16 PCI (7f). I'm not sure which, if any, of these boards are the same! I
would recommend the KISS approach using the Soundblaster 16 PCI, also around
$30, or the LIVE Value Digital.
I can confirm that you can use this board and the A/C 97 integrated system
in a Dell PW 330.
http://www.qsl.net/wa9als/so2r-mmttyx2.htm. In fact, I have run the LIVE
Value Digital, the 116PCI, and the A/C 97 integrated all together in the
Dell PW330.
I think some of the variable reports have to do with differing OS and other
configuration/hardware issues. It's encouraging that almost all of the
reports are 7f, indicating that almost any Windows soundcard should work.
On the other hand, Jon Harder, K1US, reported some disappointing results
here about the Audigy awhile back, so I would stay away from that.
Good luck, John!
