All OK now--The solution was simple, but I still haven't figured out 
what kind of ground problem I have.

The tip off, as some suggested, was the low level hum in the audio.  The 
cure for hum in the audio seems to always be the 1:1 Radio Shack 
isolation transformer.

Interstingly, I only need one transformer.  It can either be placed in 
line with the left radio headset connection to the Keyer, or in the 
right radio headset line to the Keyer.  Not a trace of coupling now, and 
also some slight pops in the CW messages are also gone.
