This is risky because you are placing the image on the same drive as the
original.  If the HD dies, you lose both the original and the image.
Much safer to install a second HD and image to that.  HDs are so cheap
anymore, there's no excuse not to.  Also, I'd recommend replacing all
your HDs every 3-4 years just to be safe.  Don't wait till they die.
Use the old HDs for non-critical applications.

But even with a second HD, you should still image to a set of CDs now
and then just in case the computer itself is destroyed or stolen.  And
keep the CDs stored elsewhere, preferable in a different location
entirely.

There are no absolute guarantees of safety in this, just differing
degrees of assurance.
