The circuit can also be built inside the DB-9 connector.  On mine, I
built and tested the circuit and after making sure it worked, filled
up the inside of the connector with RTV silicone, completely
encapsulating the circuit.  Use the type of silicone made for sealing
aquariums because it has no corrosive acid fumes.

It's been in use for ten years now with no problems.
