Bob, your question is like asking what is the best car, you will get 1000 answers.
If you are going to use it for ham rtty, I would suggest MMTTY/soundcard demodulator with Writelog. If you want something better, then an IC-756PROII/III transceiver and use the internal demodulator as the frontend to MMTTY.
Anything else is old school and not worth the time and effort. So will say RITTY is the best, while this maybe true, it is not worth the trouble of getting the software and then getting it running.
Hope this helps and welcome to rtty contesting again.

Subject: [WriteLog] Best RTTY demodulator?
Has there been a study as to which method/device/software best decodes RTTY?
I worked my first RTTY contest this past weekend and loved it. I used the WriteLog RTTY program. Worked really sweet!
I am an old RTTYer from the 60s, you know, polar relays/ST5-ST6/Flesher, model 15-19-28asr, etc.
Have never tried a HAL8000? If that is the correct nomenclature.
I did FSK my Pro-3 before the contest as I do not like AFSK and RF getting into audio cables etc.
TIA
Bob, W3PT
