I posted this question and then managed to figure it out myself.

g_<<whateverContest>>ConfigArray[CONFIG_LENGTH] needs to have the
position and optimally, the length of the exchange fields in it. I
suppose you could assume at your own risk that the data is null
delimited. In the methods that handle each QSO, the var_part[] array
has all of the data from the exchange in it. The config array holds
the indexes to the exchange data in var_part[].
