Thanks to all for suggestions and comments. Got it built, now needs guy
wires or straps to hold it down...it's fast. I never realized how long it
takes for the hard drives to boot up. Now I am loading, and loading
software.

Again, Tnx es 73s, Grant W5XB

Building a new ham radio computer.

Planning on a faster I5 CPU. That's a 4 core and since I am not crunching
huge bunches of numbers, it will be fast enough.

The supplier suggested another way to speed things up: use a solid state
drive since I don't need a large drive. At about $1 a gigabyte, it seems a
good a good choice.

Is anyone using an SSD? I am guessing the flash memory is not bothered by
the presence of high RF energy, but I am not sure...so I am asking.

Grant,

I have a new pc with an I7 processor, 8g of memory and a 256g ssd. The
pc takes a little less than 20 seconds to boot up which is real nice.
I'm sure every thing else runs faster, but the most noticeable
improvement is the boot up speed.

Yes, I've migrated both of my old systems to SSD and it makes a
significant difference in boot times as well as response when
dealing with large logs.

The other thing you can do to maximize performance in a new system
is install as much primary RAM as you can afford (and use a 64 bit
operating system). 16 GB is not "too large" as it will keep swapping
to disk to an absolute minimum unless your programs are complete
memory hogs.

I'm using aOCZ Vertex 4 VTX4-25SAT3-128G 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC
Internal Solid State Drive (SSD). It has been working really well for
me. I also have a 500 GB drive for a storage location of my Documents
and Program Install Files.

Also using a i5 3570k processor 8 GB of Ram

I have been very happy with this setup. Boots in about 15 seconds

Bought everything at Newegg

Setup: WinXP; WriteLog, SteppIR Monstr
Is there some way to get WriteLog to use the split freq (VFO B) for transmit

when split is set? At present,
in contests on 40M, I have to set the SteppIR control to manual to select
the freq when in split and the xmit stn is received on VFO A. Tnx

My W5XD keyer is suffering from a near lightning hit. Looking for a
replacement. Send me condition, serial number and price. Will buy 2 of
them if I can find them. Prefer higher serial numbers (>300).

Randy, K5ZD

I do not know that WriteLog sends any data to SteppIR - in most cases
SteppIR is simply listening to data coming back to the logging software
from the rig. SteppIR's controls are designed to read the VFO A data
on the serial line and does not attempt to decode "split" status. The
issue is also complicated by rigs like the Icom that do not even report
the split status or "transmit" frequency other than when in transmit.

Some years back N8LP had a software solution that read the data and
provided direct SteppIR control. microHAM have some capabilities to
generate either direct SteppIR control or provide independent Icom
compatible data in microKEYER II (CAT/Sound card interface) and
Station Master (Band Decoder). However, both the software and hardware
approaches are add on solutions.

Dave, I also put my SteppIR in manual mode with operating split when the
split in frequency causes the antenna to tune.

I don't think there's anything you can do about it.
