John,
Sounds like you are trying to run AFSK. Set the 7800 to LSB-D1, (or LSB-D2,
or LSB-D3). Check your 7800 manual and settings to see which digital mode
configuration is the one you want. Usually it is LSB-D1. On my IC-7600 the
settings are found in ACC set mode. Using one of the digital modes sets
your mike off so no shack noises go out over the air. Anyway, for AFSK, use
LSB, not RTTY on the radio setting.
In WriteLog on the main menu go to Bands and check 'LSB is really FSK'.
When running this tells WL that any QSOs logged are really RTTY, not SSB.
If you have a COMM port setup for rig control in Setup/Ports then in the
Bands section select Set Frequency&Mode... and in the drop box at the bottom
pick the 'rig on COMMn' selection to auto track your band changes and VFO
frequency.
You don't say, but what are you using for your interface - serial port, USB
port, external box, etc.? This may also impact what you need to set. Also,
what RTTY software are you using - Rttyrite, MMTTY, 2Tone or what? Again,
this is crucial to getting things setup to work properly.
I highly recommend you checkout Don AA5AU's informative RTTY website,
particularly the information at www.rttycontesting.com/tutorials/writelog/.
Here you will find a wealth of information about configuring WL to run RTTY
under a variety of OS, hardware and software configurations.

Subject: [WriteLog] 7800 and rtty
I am trying to interface Writelog to my 7800 using the writelog afsk
facility.
When I put Writelog into rtty, it forces the 7800 into it's internal rtty
system and does not send tones. If I set Writelog to MANUAL FREQ. then the
radio stays on ssb and everything seems to work fine except then it does
not follow band changes and allow clicking on spots. If I set Writelog to
SSB it does not output RTTY audio. Help???
