[WriteLog] Problems With Writelog (Update)

Marsh,

Upon further review... Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa!

I was totally asleep at the switch on this one and must retract most of my
earlier message, particularly the part about most of those extra files in
the download not being used by WL. I have gone back and tired both methods
suggested by Marsh and find that in fact WL DOES use the extra files, not
just the wl_cty.dat one.

There are numerous other country .dat and .bin files that come with the
country download file. The CTY-2514.zip file contains 37 different files,
all of which are not used by WL. The wl-cty.zip file, downloaded by using
the WriteLog link, contains 19 files. These 19 files are also present in
the CTY-2514.zip which means 18 files in the larger zip file are used by
other programs. Therefore I should think using the smaller wl-cty.zip file
would be the correct option as these files ARE used by WL!

I revisited the Web Update Data Files option in WriteLog and gave it a
whirl. It downloaded an extremely long list of files to be updated. I
deselected the wl_cty.dat file and all the MASTER.DTA files and downloaded
the rest. When WL restarted I checked the VERSION and much to my surprise
it had reverted back to Uzbekistan! This even though I deselected the
wl_cty.dat file. Strangely enough the various MASTER.DTA files did not
download and remained unchanged since my previous download direct from
www.supercheckpartial.com.

So as Marsh had stated earlier I went back to www.country-files.com and
downloaded the WriteLog link files again, unzipped them into
C:\ProgramData\WriteLog and then ran the Convert CTY to WriteLog utility
again, without doing another download. This restored the VERSION in WL back
to Ukraine, which is the current version.

So what to make of all this? When I look at the files in the wl-cty.zip
folder all but one has a current date of 12-02-2015. So apparently each of
these files contains some new updated information from Jim AD1C and should
be unzipped into the C:\ProgramData\WriteLog folder. As Marsh has indicated
earlier though, be cautious when using the Web Update Data Files utility
within WL. Even if you deselect files you don't want, you may get them
anyway! It looks like the only surefire method is to run the Web Update
Data Files utility and then go back and download both the wl-cty.zip file
and the various MASTER.DTA files to be sure you are getting the latest
stuff. Then run the Convert CTY utility again to convert the latest
wl_cty.dat file into WL. This should now leave you with the latest and
greatest. Until the next week or so!

Sorry for my confusion and I hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks to
Marsh for his investigations into this matter. I should have verified
everything before running off at the keyboard!

Gary AL9A

Thank you Gary.

I believe that Web Update Data Files may be a source of problems and
confusion.

Are you sure that the other files in addition to wl_cty.dat you get when you
unzip wl_cty-2514.zip are NOT used by WriteLog? They always overwrite
existing files in C:\ProgramData\WriteLog when they are installed. And, why
does AD1C go to the trouble of including them in wl_cty-2514.zip if they are
NOT used? Just askin'.

In a previous e-mail exchange, you mentioned that you are using VISTA and
have no problems with WriteLog. I believe as computer savvy as you are, you
would not have any problems with WriteLog whichever OS you were running. I
have used WriteLog with XP, 7, 10 and maybe 98. Everything worked and still
works with 10.

Marsh has provided some very good info for updating the wl_cty.dat file.
We've had some off reflector conversations recently concerning this issue
and I would like to chime in with two points I made to him at that time.

1. Never use Web Update Data Files from within WriteLog to download and
update the wl_cty.dat file or the various MASTER.DTA files. As Marsh has
indicated these files are frequently out of date when downloaded from the WL

web site and you will end up having to download them again anyway, and in
the case of wl_cty.dat, convert it again to get the latest version. Since
you will have to go directly to http://www.country-files.com/ and
http://www.supercheckpartial.com/ to get the latest current versions of
these updates there is no need to complicate the process by downloading
these from the Web Update site.

2. When downloading the latest country files from
http://www.country-files.com/ there is no reason to download the complete
CTY-2514 or other similarly named file as this download contains many
extraneous files that are not used by WriteLog. As Marsh has noted this
file contains 19 different files including wl_cty.dat which is the only one
needed by WriteLog. Rather than downloading all those unneeded files it is
easier just to click on the WriteLog link on the Download line. This will
download only the wl_cty.dat file to whatever folder you decide to pace it
in. I always put it in the C:\ProgramData\Writelog folder since that is
where the Convert program expects to find it.

Mike,

"I did follow Marsh's recommendation and I can see the new files etc. Even
after doing the manual update via Marsh's method, Writelog says it would
like to do the update."

This is no need to download again if you can see the new files in
C:\ProgramData\WriteLog. Ignore the Download wl_cty.dat box in Convert CTY
to WriteLog and just click on the Convert wl_cty.dat box.

To confirm you have and WriteLog is using the latest country files:

Run WriteLog and start a new contest log for a contest with Country in the
QSO entry window (something like CQWW).

Type VERSION in the Callsign field and press the Spacebar. The latest
version is Ukraine

****************************************************************************

NOTE:

IF YOU RUN Web Update Data Files, YOUR NEW LATEST wl_cty.dat WILL BE
OVERWRITTEN UNLESS YOU UN-HIGHLIGHT (DESELECT) IT. If you do not deselect
wl_cty.dat and download, then run Convert CTY to WriteLog, and click on the
Convert wl_cty.dat box, WriteLog will go back to using an older version of
wl_cty.dat. The VERSION will be Uzbekistan.

ALSO, IF YOU HAVE UPDATED YOUR SCP (.dta) FILES TO THE VERSION DATED
12-2-2015, IF YOU RUN Web Update Data Files AND DO NOT UN-HIGHLIGHT
(DESELECT) THEM YOUR SCP (.dta) FILES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN WITH THE
11-18-2014 VERSION.

The files you get when you run Web Update Data Files and download are not
current.

Hi Gang:

First off thanks to Ed, Robert, Ken and Marsh..

After doing a complete uninstall and manually removing left over files I
found that I have no more Writelog files on the HDD. I did a new install and
found that I have avoided much of the duplication of files that I did have.

I accidentally dumped all my old contest files but not a big deal, I can
just redo them from scratch. Since I am now retired I will have extra time
on my hands...HiHi...

I however still find that doing the Webupdate of files doesn't work at all.
I did follow Marsh's recommendation and I can see the new files etc. Even
after doing the manual update via Marsh's method, Writelog says it would
like to do the update. From what I can tell the Webupdate option is broken
as even after manually updating the CTY files, Writelog still say's they
need to be updated. When I go to Webupdate, all the files in the box are
shaded blue, perhaps to do the Webupdate I have to unshade all those files.
It has been a while since I have done the Webupdate.

At least I have a good working copy of Writelog on the HDD, and not 2 or
more extra directories full of files that were not even being used. I guess
it was time for a cleanup any ways.

Tnx Agn guys for your help...
