I certainly do -- some top contesters are appliance operators. But many 
others are not.  There are two great pieces in NCJ written by W9RE and 
K9RS, two guys who built their own stations. My neighbor, K6XX, built 
his excellent station pretty much all by himself, including clearing the 
dense brush to make room for it (and did the tower climbing for me).

A major reason I prefer to contest at home rather than from one of the 
local super-station multiops is that I DID build it myself. I DO use 
SCP, simply because that has become SOP for the rest of the players on 
the field. I use my own CH files because they include MY mistakes, not 
someone else's. :)
