I did some more experimenting, and found that what led me to my conclusion is a bug or omission in Writelog’s Recover Layout command or the File…Save command. 

 

Here are the circumstances:

 

1.	For years I operated WL maximized with all windows docked, except Check Call, which was undocked and positioned above the Entry windows.
2.	Recently I decided to reduce the size of the main log window and undock all the other windows, positioning them below and to the side of the log window. I saved my 2019 IARU log with that format.
3.	When I open my 2018 IARU log, however, the main window is not maximized. It’s the size I used for the 2019 IARU contest.
4.	Which windows are open, whether or not they’re docked and (on closer inspection) their positions match what was in the 2018 IARU log.
5.	The smaller main window led me to believe that window sizes are not recovered from the .wl file, though the other window parameters are recovered.
6.	However, if I maximize the main window, the screen looks exactly as it did in the 2018 IARU contest – window dock/undock status, size and position included.

 

My conclusion now is that WL does not recover the maximized/minimized status of the main log window. It may also ignore that parameter for sub-windows, but I haven’t  tested that.

hi Dick - I appreciate that everyone is posting what they believe happens. But in the Tools menu there is a Recover Window Layout that you can do, and you can recover from any other .wl file. So if all that is really stored in the .ini how could you recover positions and sizes from older logs? :)

 

By the way, that's become one of my favorite WL commands! I sat down yesterday in the multi-user space that I contest in, started a new log, and the Entry window was missing! So your supposition about the previous contest for new logs may be right. 

 

To be fair, the docs do say: "Tools Recover Window Layout - When you do a File Save, WriteLog saves its current window layout in the .WL file. Use this command to recover just the window layout."

 

Hopefully someone who knows the nuts and bolts will weigh in. Cheers!
