Last night, I operated in the 50 MHz Spring Sprint, one of a series of
four-hour-long single-band VHF/UHF contests we have in North America. I've
been disappointed with activity on the other bands (the ARRL used to sponsor
these contests, but dropped them because of low activity - now, they have a
new sponsor every year, and never get well publicized, so the activity is even
lower than it used to be) but there was a good band opening last night for
about two and a half hours. From central Texas (EM10) I worked at least
Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Ontario, New York,
Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, in addition
to Texas. (It is hard to tell, as the exchange is just grid squares, and not
states.)

I find that VHF contests, particularly six meters, are great for newer
operators who are not yet active on HF. Working six meter Es openings and
then talking about it with other members of the University of Texas Amateur
Radio Club is what got me interested in DXing and contesting.

The first hour was torture, but then the band opened up, and it was a lot of
 fun.
