Hello to all on the list
First of all I would like to wish you a happy new year! I thought that I
would write a few words to sum up the year 2000, as it was the first full
year that WWYC has existed.
Overall view on the club
Our club is now one year and two months old. It all started with an article
that I wrote a part of for the NCJ magazine in the fall 1999 (it is online
at http://www.ncjweb.com/young2.pdf) Shortly thereafter it was decided
that we would try to establish a world wide club. We could only guess about
how big the interest would be, but as it turned out the interest exceeded
what I had thought was possible. It was very satisfying to experience the
growing number of members as the months went by, and it was a very
remarkable step to welcome member number 100 (UX0LL). Even today there are
still new members signing up for membership in the club each month.
Currently we are 107 members.
Activities in WWYC
As WWYC is an Internet based club, one of our main activities is the
communication that takes place on our email reflector. 90 of our members
have subscribed to the reflector which I think is an OK number. There are
also almost always WWYC'ers in the IRC chat room. If you haven't tried yet,
download a program like mIRC, point it to the server irc.worldirc.org and
join the #wwyc room. We would be very glad to see you there!
However, we must not forget that we are all licensed radio amateurs, and
that we should not forget to use that ham radio bands :)
It was tried to establish a HF-net, but it didn't seem possible to keep
up the interest for such a thing. I will be the first to admit that I
was not active in that many HF-nets, since I don't have any antennas here
at my home QTH. But I still think that it would be great to have such a
net. Another thing which we could do was to meet on a frequency an hour
before the big contests. I've tried this a couple of times, and it is
really nice to say hello to the club members right before we are going
to "fight" against each other :)
The WWYC participation in the contests have been good - just look at
the lists we managed to make for the CQWW SSB/CW and the ARRL 10 meter
contest. I also seem to remember that the ARRL DX CW contest offered a very
nice participation from the WWYC group. After each contest I'm very happy to
see so many WWYC QSO's in my log, so lets keep being active in as many
contests as possible!
During the year we have also been considering some bigger events. First we
were discussing the WWYC contest, but I think we realized that there are
already contests enough in the calendar. On the other hand I still feel
that it would be very nice to organize some kind of ON AIR event (a QSO
party?) for our club. Any further ideas about such an event would be very
welcome.
We were also thinking about a DX-pedition in one of the CQWW contests next
year. Again an excellent idea that would give us an opportunity to do
something together as a club, but it would require lots of very hard work
and a great deal money if we shall succeed in organizing such an event. For
myself it just doesn't seem possible right now, but lets not forget the idea
completely.
Management of the club
In the very beginning of WWYC (when we had 10 members, or so) we just split
some of the jobs between us - Mike SM3WMV became the webmaster, LZ5AZ took
care of the new members and I became the 'manager' for the club. Now when we
have more than 100 members, I was thinking that I have actually never been
elected, and I don't want to be some kind of dictator :-) Actually I don't
think that WWYC needs to be managed by a small group of people and have a
real elected president, but at least I would like to ask about what you
think about this? Also, if everybody else should be interested in becoming
the 'manager' for WWYC, send a mail to me or the reflector, and then we can
have an election.
This is the list of the WWYC'ers who are responsible for special jobs. I
know that some of the jobs are a bit out of date... Anyway, thanks to these
people for doing the job for WWYC!

What is the future of WWYC?
Of course the natural goal would be to get more members into the club,
and I certainly also hope that we will be able to welcome many more younger
contesters in the next years. I would also hope that the members we have now
will be as active as time and circumstances permit, and that there still
will be lots of traffic on the email reflector/chat room - and not to
forget, I hope there still will be many WWYC QSO's available in the future!
Another question could me, if we should be more known among contesters
outside WWYC? Perhaps they don't really care about what happens in our club,
just like I don't care too much about what happens in Florida Contest Group
(just an example). On the other hand WWYC, is a bit different from other
clubs because we are 'World Wide' and are the new generation of contesters.
Perhaps I could re-edit this text, and put it on contesting.com to show that
WWYC is still alive? We could perhaps also gain a few more members that way!
It would also be nice to hear from any of you, if you have other ideas about
activities that we could introduce in the club. I guess that some of you are
members of other local contest clubs, and perhaps these clubs have some good
things that we could use in WWYC?
Well, it looks like I managed to write a bit more than a few words, but it
just shows that WWYC IS alive and that there is a lot to write about! Again
I would like to wish you all a happy and successful new year both inside and
outside the contest world.
I will be happy to receive some answers to the questions a have made in this
mail here on the reflector, or to my personal mail address: oz1aa@qsl.net
