Hello Contesters
Only big numbers were posted here, so I thought I'd break that habit ;o)
No antennas yet (only one for 40m that needs tuning) so I didn't reserve this
weekend. I had to go to a meeting on Saturday and we got visit on Saturday evening.
By 2000utc it was itching, and I could even hear stations on 40m without any antenna
connected. OH2AQ DX Summit told me there was no ON5 spotted so far, so I couldn't
control myself any longer.
The coax was sealed with tape until I had some time to look into the problem (antenna
resonates on 8MHz). But it got too strong and I took my MagLite and sneaked into the
garden to connect the antenna to the coax. I was afraid of the YL's reaction because
we had company, but they understood. Besides I don't like the EuroSong festival ;o)
I tuned the antenna with the ATU (yep, I was desperate hi) and I made about 110 Q's
and went downstairs again. Another 100 or so on Sunday evening and that was it.
Only EU, easily cracked pile up for TO5AA, A61AJ+AR, SU9NC and that was it. Surprise:
a VK2 called me at 2100z and was surprisingly loud. I thought I miscopied a UK2, but
then again, ON5ZO seldomly miscopies (grin grin ;o)
Setup: TS-850, 100W, N1MMLogger driving WinKey, great setup! Apart from looking up
any ON5 prior to starting the activity, no cluster was used.
Antenna is a shorted vertical dipole with coils and capacity hats on top and
underneath, made and designed by ON4BAI who made me beta-tester. Because of the
difference in ground conductivity (I think?), the antenna resonates 1MHz too high
compared to ON4BAI's QTH (>100km away). Should fix that one of these (days, weeks,
months?).
