The world of DX is abuzz with news of the
activation of HK0NA – Malpelo Island IOTA SA-007, an island
approximately 378km off of Colombia’s Pacific Coast. Now, with about 15
operators as part of the DXpedition, things are really shaping up for the
projected January 22 start-up, 2012. Team Leader, HK1R, with the
Colombian license already in-hand, plans to have his team fully operating on
all bands and modes as allowable by Colombian regulations.

Malpelo Island is a small island
of 0.35 square kilometers or approximately 85 acres. It’s completely
uninhabited with the exception of a small Colombian military post. It’s mostly
sheer rocky crag will make setting up antennas an interesting project in and of
itself.

The so-called Isla de Malpelo was declared
by UNESCO as a natural World Heritage Site on July 12, 2006.
