Does anyone out there have a good voltage/resistance chart for the Yaesu
ft 620b? It's a circa 1970's 6 meter ssb/cw rig and I am planning to go
thru mine with a complete alignment. A service manual would be even
better. I already have the operator's booklet and schematic.

Thanks

hello radio amateurs

when listening to lsb mode on lower bands the audio shifts -I have to use
the IF shift knob to tune in.

could there be a IF filter intermittent problem?

seems to work ok in Usb mode.

I replaced the 455 hz with a FoxTango .

thanks Paul VE3PKH

Anyone know why the Return-Path header changed from
owner-yaesu@contesting.com to yaesu-admin@contesting.com? I could not figure
out why all these messages were not being filed correctly.

The Return-Path header changed when the owner of Contesting.com
changed the mail group software from Majordomo to Mailman. Mailman
is a GNU (open source) mailgroup (list) software with many feature
improvements over Majordomo, including a web-based interface for
user account maintenance, subscription, etc.

Two weeks ago, I sent the following enquiry to Vertex Standard
Corporation. I have yet to receive an acknowledgement or a
reply. Perhaps someone on this list can answer my questions:

Gentlemen:

The Yaesu VL-1000/VP-1000 Quadra System is under consideration for an
application on U. S. Government HF allocations. We have the
following two questions, each of which has subsections. We
acknowledge that prior to your response, there may be a delay while
our enquiry is forwarded to the design engineers at your parent
company in Japan for their assessment.

I) Will the Yaesu VL-1000/VP-1000 Quadra System operate on
frequencies outside the HF Amateur Radio Service bands?

a) If not, what circuitry or software restricts its operation to the
HF Amateur Radio Service bands?

b) If the Yaesu VL-1000/VP-1000 Quadra System will operate on
frequencies outside the HF Amateur Radio Service bands, what
performance or specification changes should the user expect?
Furthermore, are hardware, software, or procedural modifications
necessary to enable operation on U. S. Government HF frequencies?

II) What is the response of Vertex Standard Company regarding (a)
providing product support for, and (b) the continuing availability
of, the Yaesu VL-1000/VP-1000 Quadra System now that Motorola
Incorporated has discontinued the MRF150 transistor used within the
Quadra System?

Thank you for your consideration.

Quadra on Government FrequenciesI have been putting together an =
interface for automatic antenna selection which runs off the "D" Band =
Data din plug...the new auto switch does NOT appear to be receiving the =
band data:

1) Is there a software control needed to turn on the band data jack on =
the back of the D?

2) The pinout for the band data plug amy be in error...I went by the =
photo in the manual, but the lug as shown on the schematic has different =
phyiscal locations for the pins than the picture shows them as having.

3) When the band data plug is plugged in there is no RF output on the =
rig.

4) The picture show both a Gnd and a TX gnd pin - for band data should I =
be using the gnd or the TX ground?

5) Is there a way to check the band data output - is it a string of DC =
output voltages I can measure on the mete or what...

Hopefully someone else has been down this road before.

Thanks, 73

Jim,

You have to follow the wiring as shown on the SCHEMATIC
included with the radio. The DIN plug pinout is not correct as shown
on the photo. You also need to connect pins 3 and 8 on the DIN
plug to enable transmit when you insert the plug. There is no
software switch needed. Your problems are a result of an error in
the D manual.

Hi Alex,

I'm sorry for not being able to answer earlier. The TTL-RS232 converter is
a single IC and anyone can build such a device very easily. The circuit you
need is the so-called MAX232. This IC is produced by many manufacturers like
ICL232 and so on. I can email you the application note.

You only have to add a few of capacitors and a resistor to limit the current
the radio can suck from the IC and you have it working.

Hi all
I recently discovered my FT1000D has gone low gain above 12Mhz - by
around 12dBs or so. Probably the results of being a mult rig during a
recent contest ! It is fine (by comparing with another FT1K) up to that
frequency. Presumably a component in the bandpass switching has gone -
any ideas which may be the culprit ?

Chances are it's the first coil to ground in the bandpass filter...if it's
the bandpass filter. Does sensitivity come back at the next range higher?
I dont remember if the older 1000 (vs MP) has input LP/HP filtering at
all, but the same coil tends to go bad in those as well.

I never had a problem with my D, but I've replaced several of these little
coils in my MP's. I've not had any fail since I put RX limiters on them.

I've never had any problems other than those first coils to ground in the
filter sections.

Hi All,
I need to install a tone board in My FT 227...... all the local repeaters
went tone access.

QUESTION....... are the Communications Specialist units compatible with this
rig?

I doubt a person could find an original optional unit. PB-1555A??
I would appreciate any responses concerning this matter.

For Sale:

Yaesu FT-708 HT for 440 MHz.
Fully synthesized, with nice LCD display.
This particular unit looks almost like new,
and works the same. Battery is in good shape.
Includes charger and manual for $100.

Yaesu YM-24 A speaker mic.
Fits the above HT, plus many others. It has
the odd little round connector on it like Yaesu,
Wilson, and others used in the 1970s and 80s.
This particular unit is almost like new, in the
box, with paper work. $ 20

Icom HS-10 and HS-10 SB, boom headset
with the microphone and switch box. Gain
control in the switch box. Fits most Icom, ADI,
Alinco, some Yaesu, and other HTs that take the
same plugs. New these are $110 for the combo, but
this one is in great shape for only $ 55.

Daiwa Boom mic and headset. Similar to the Icom
HS-10 listed above. Great shape for $ 40.

Prices do not include shipping from Florida.

Thanks.

Hi All,
Am new to this list, although I have owned an FT920 (used mainly on 6m) =
for the last couple of years. I am in the process of buying one of the =
last new FT1000 radios available in the UK and would appreciate advice =
on:

1/ Filters - should I go for the Yaesu ones or InRad ones? Which would =
you consider to be the essential ones, if on a limited budget? I =
currently have a TS850sat with 1.8ssb and cascaded 500hz cw filters, =
which I find is fine=20
for general ssb and cw contesting plus some casual dxing. Do I really =
need the second rx filter?

2/ Are there any warranty approved mods that I really should get carried =
out in the workshop beofre the radio is despatched to me?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,
I have the FT990 and really like the rig. I am considering sending it to =

I just acquired a FL-2100Z amp. This is not the 9-band version (covering the
WARC bands) rather it's what I'm lead to believe was an overseas model
covering 10 - 160 meters. The amp is extremely clean has been well cared for
and with minor exception meets my current requirements.

Is anyone aware of any modifications for this amp? If so, I would certainly
appreciate receiving whatever information might be available. In addition,
if anyone has the amp in service, I would like the opportunity to exchange
email directly with you as I have some specific questions about the amp.

As always, any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Jeff,

The pinout for the FT-1000D CAT connector (6 pin DIN) is on page 7
of the manual:

                Pin 1: Ground
                Pin 2: Serial Out (TTL)
                Pin 3: Serial In (TTL)
                Pin 4: PTT
                Pin 5: S/PO (AGC voltage)
                Pin 6: n/c

There are several RS-232 to TTL converter schematics on the web
and almost an equal number of niche marketers selling interfaces
and/or kits. You can also purchase the Yaesu FIF-232 interface
from most Yaesu dealers. Unfortunately, I do not have a current
list of URLs ...

   ... Joe, K4IK (ex-AD8I, W8IK)

Subject: [Yaesu] CAT cable for 1000D

Does anyone know where I can find a schematic for a CAT cable for a 1000D? I
went through the archives all the way back to 1998, nothing found. I have a
cable that I use with my Yaesu VX5R, FT-90, etc, this level converter cable
also works with my Icom 706. All I really need is the pinout for the large
DIN connector on the 1000D, so I can make an adapter plug. Thanks in advance
.

I had one for 7 years. I thought the RX was superb, much better on CW RX
than the 990 I also had in the shack. CW TX slightly drifted though.
Its best if the relays have been changed, I bought the yaesu kit for mine
and replaced the lot with out too much bother.
I replaced the tubes when I bought it and they were still putting out 186W
on 80M 7 years later, not too bad!

Hi All,
My original message is below.... At least I've learned that the Com-Spec
SS-64 tone board will work in the rig...... If there are any interested
memorizer owners .... I will be happy to share My experience with the rig.
73 Bill "Sparkling City By the Sea"
              Corpus Christi, Texas WJ5O/BCN 28.289MHz

I need to install a tone board in My FT 227...... all the local repeaters
went tone access.

QUESTION....... are the Communications Specialist units compatible with this
rig?

I doubt a person could find an original optional unit. PB-1555A??
I would appreciate any responses concerning this matter.

Make sure to get the 600-Hz (or is it really 500-Hz?) filter for the
sub-receiver. Otherwise, you'll think you went deaf when you're listening
to a station through the main receiver's 500-Hz filter and you send that
frequency to the sub-receiver. Unlike most other manufacturers, Yaesu
didn't bother spending the extra penny for a couple of diodes to steer the
signals through the sub-receiver's wide filter when the optional narrow
filter isn't installed. It probably doesn't make any difference which brand
you get for the sub-receiver's narrow filter: I'm not even sure if InRad
makes one for the sub-receiver.

I don't think it's worth the extra money to buy any optional filters for the
FT-1000, although it would probably be worth several hundred dollars extra
for an FT-1000D. The FT-1000D contains all of the filters that it's
possible to add into an FT-1000, except for the optional 600-Hz sub-receiver
filter. The FT-1000D also contains the optional bandpass filter (BPF) unit,
so you can listen to two different bands at the same time. I've heard that
each FT-1000D leaves Japan as an ordinary FT-1000, and its box is opened by
Yaesu in California so the filters (and BPF unit) can be installed: Yaesu
then stamps a D following the FT-1000 on the box and re-seals it.

Subject: [Yaesu] FT1000 filter and essential mods help

Hi All,
Am new to this list, although I have owned an FT920 (used mainly on 6m) for
the last couple of years. I am in the process of buying one of the last new
FT1000 radios available in the UK and would appreciate advice on:

1/ Filters - should I go for the Yaesu ones or InRad ones? Which would you
consider to be the essential ones, if on a limited budget? I currently have
a TS850sat with 1.8ssb and cascaded 500hz cw filters, which I find is fine
for general ssb and cw contesting plus some casual dxing. Do I really need
the second rx filter?

2/ Are there any warranty approved mods that I really should get carried out
in the workshop beofre the radio is despatched to me?

Thanks for your help.

Make sure to get the 600-Hz (or is it really 500-Hz?) filter for the
sub-receiver. Otherwise, you'll think you went deaf when you're
listening
to a station through the main receiver's 500-Hz filter and you send
that
frequency to the sub-receiver. Unlike most other manufacturers,
Yaesu
didn't bother spending the extra penny for a couple of diodes to
steer
the
signals through the sub-receiver's wide filter when the optional
narrow
filter isn't installed.

Actually, this will only happen in CW mode. If you are in USB or
LSB the sub-receiver will also work. In CW it does indeed go
dead, *but* if you set the sub-rx for USB or LSB while the main
rx is in CW mode, it will spring back to life. This can be very
annoying, however, and the easiest thing is to install the
sub-rx CW filter if you operate that mode. BTW if you set the
sub-rx for SSB modes, it is also set for SSB bandwidth!

It probably doesn't make any difference which
brand
you get for the sub-receiver's narrow filter: I'm not even sure if
InRad
makes one for the sub-receiver.

Inrad makes a couple of narrower CW filters for the sub-rx.
Something like 400Hz and 250Hz if I remember right. The
Yaesu 600Hz unit is probably fine for most operators. If
you do a lot of contesting, the Inrads would make life a lot
easier. They would also help if you do a lot of weak signal
DXing on the noisy low bands.

I believe that the FT-1000D does not ship with the 250Hz
3rd IF filter, but it does have the 250Hz 2nd IF unit. KD5VC
published a clever mod that runs the 250 2nd IF filter with
the 500Hz 3rd IF filter (the default is to cascade with the
2.4KHz unit). See:
http://www.angelfire.com/md/k3ky/page64.html
and click on the two KD5VC items.

You are correct. There are three differences between the
FT-1000D and the FT-1000. The FT-1000D includes all of
the optional filters *EXCEPT FOR THE 250 Hz 3RH IF FILTER*,
the FT-1000D includes the BPF-1 "split band front-end
filter" for the sub receiver, and the higher stability
reference oscillator.

The 600-Hz sub-receiver filter is not included with the FT-1000 and it's not
included with the FT-1000D either.

Thanks to Steven, N5SK for the particulars on FT-1000D
missing options. BTW I bought a used FT-1000 and later
got a BPF-1 bandpass filter assembly and installed it.
It was money well spent. Diversity reception is worth the
effort it takes to get it! To my knowledge, the older
FT-1000 and the "D" are the only ham transceivers that
are capable of true antenna diversity reception. There is
a (partial) mod published for the MP, but it is a pretty
major effort to build up the external box that does it, and
it involves getting hold of a BPF-1 anyway and modifying it.
A special ROM is needed to complete the design. This has
been done by a Japanese ham, but is not commercially
available, and I have never seen a complete schematic
published.

Thanks also to Joe, K4IK for the new url of the archive item
I have on my FT-1000D mods page for KD5VC's mod-
http://www.angelfire.com/md/k3ky/page64.html
I had to fix 4 or 5 of them on that page. Everything is
working again. Now I need to do the same on my Flags
and Pennants antenna compendium page, where there are
a lot more urls to fix. I think it is great that the guys at the
Topband archives let this Major Domo guy retire with full
pension, but he sure left a lot of broken links behind him! :o)

Yep, I concur with everything you said David. Along with that antenna
diversity reception that I highly endorse, don't forget the mode and filter
diversity reception that works great too.

Using headphones, or speakers centered to your far left and right, brings in
a improved sorting ability when turning around with dual receivers too. In
fact this portion of the diversity reception 'plays' with the brain, and I
find not only very pleasing listening as a result, but because I can
'mentally' sort different audio types being feed to each ear, I also find my
fatigue listening factor is reduced considerably. I frequently put one
receiver on to Usb for a AM broadcast station, and the other receiver on
LSB. Depth is immediately improved. Then if you play with the Dsp settings
on the main receiver, it almost sounds like stereo effects! Wonderful brain
spatial effects galore this way. Using one receiver on plain AM and the
other on AM Synchronized isn't bad when tuning around and having the tuning
knobs locked together. Signals slide around the head real neato! Lets don't
forget experimenting with different width filters between the two receivers
also.

Actually it would be very easy to bring out a separate antenna connection
from the FT-1000MP sub receiver. There is plenty of room on the back panel
for a connecter.... or you could free up one of the connectors already
there. Only thing missing would be to use a tuner so as to provide some
front end filtering to contain the overload issue from nearby strong
signals. Most tuners would be a big help. Yep I know it is not a band pass
filter and it doesn't change band to band automatically, but neither did our
rigs of yore... hi hi

There is a mod for the D out there some where, that ties the two receivers
tuning together, which is very very nice to have when tuning around with
diversity reception. One day I plan to implement that in my MP. Currently
you have to hold in the main receiver dial lock to tune the main receiver
and have the sub receiver track with it. That button holding hurts the
finger after awhile.... hi hi

Just a last minute reminder of Leslie's weekend Watch Tower ET Special Event

She will operate September 1-3, 2001 which is Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Located in south central Colorado at almost 8,000 feet above sea level, the
San Luis Valley is the highest Alpine Valley in the world. With a long
history of strange happenings going on here, it is possible you might tune
in at the right moment and hear about some of it live. Leslie has a
magnetometer with her designed and built by Mike, WA8YKN that should give
her a heads of warning of any magnetic anomalies so Leslie can grab a camera
and hopefully get a recording. She had a false alarm last night... hi hi

73 Magazine August 2001 has information starting on page12. Joyce of 73

your feeling better soon!!

Greetings,

I'm looking for a tone board, and possibly a 1.2GHz
module for my new hamshack addition (736R). Does
anyone have either of these items they'd wish to part
with?

Regards

Does the Yaesu FT-847 permit a frequency readout different from the actual
RF module used. For example, if the 144 mhz output is used with a 1200 mhz
transverter, is it possible to have the FT-847 frequency
readout temporarily show the 1200 mhz frequency ? In my FT-1000MP Mark
V there is a menu change which permits the readout to relect the frequency
of a 50, 144, or 430 mhz transverter (see page 14 in the Mark V manual)?
It would sure be nice if this were possible with the FT-847. Please reply
to donsay2@home.com

Hi! Marty and thanks for your info. I have located the pins 2-tx gnd, 8-tx
inhibit, 3-gnd and 1-13v and will be using a buffer (Ameritron ARB-702) with
the DIN plug between the Ameritron QSK 5 and the FT1000MP to make sure the
current and voltage requirements are within safe levels. The back panel of
the QSK 5 has the following RCA jacks:
Amp relay – to amplifier relay
Key 1 – to transceiver VOX relay and center jack also is to be connected to
AUX for handshaking with a diode 1n4001 to split the output.
Key 2 – to transceiver QSK line

My problem is how to connect the Key 1, Key 2 and AUX as I could not find a
VOX relay on the FT1000MP. is this what the PTT jack is? just dont want to
mess up with it as it might damage the units.

Thanks and hope to see you on the bands.

I'm considering replacing my G-800SDX rotor with a G-1000SDX.

Are the cable connections the same? i.e. Can I just plug my current rotor
cable into the new G-1000 ?

I have a 3 year old FT-2500M. All has been working until last week. Let me tell you the problem and see if you might have an opinion of a solution:
1. Receive Ok
2. Transmit - Full output and then NOTHING. Right in the middle of a sentence, output to zero.
Then after a minute or two, full output again, may last the whole qso.

I first thought it might the high SWR on the antenna causing the shutdown. But the antenna checked ok, and I moved the rig in the house and put it on the station antenna and later on a dummy load. Same problem. Hi/med/low power setting made no different.

The 3 things that come to mind that could be the problem are:
1. BAD PA.
2. BAD antenna relay
3. BAD SWR circuit.
Anyone have any ideas? The PA is $90.00. So Sending it to Yaesu, postage and parts would exceed the cost of a new rig.

Also if anyone has a circuit diagram that they could send me I would appricate it.

Joe;
Most modern VHF radios do not use an antenna relay. PIN diodes do the
switching now. This doesn't sound like a defective PA module. I would
look, first, for an intermittant connection. This could be ata connector,
or cold solder. Good hunting.
