[Yaesu] Remove belt clip on FT50R?

My FT50R came with the belt clip already attached to the
battery. The instructions say it can be removed by moving
the lever and pulling up. I can't budge the lever more than
about 1/2 way before my finger gives out. I'm afraid to use
any more force with tools - might break it. 

Any thoughts?
