John,
I have a 990/DSP-59Y pair and like it well. Also have friends who sold
their 990s and replaced them, one with a OmniVI+ and another with
a 920. I'll set forth features by as follows:

990 Pluses:
Great CW radio (I'm mainly CW op), I have both 500 and 250 filters.
990/DSP59Y great combination, DSP59Y full featured DSP,
digital readout of settings, provision for two radio inputs,
center frequency and bandwidth controls for CW,
too many to describe on short statement.
AC model has built-in power supply.
Easy to operate, even simple, quiet fan.
Clean transmitted signal, great noise blanker.
Good balanced CW and SSB radio, two IF CW and SSB filters.
990 Minuses:
Older design, lacks twin band stacking registers,
CTCSS tones on FM, power can't be easily reduced to QRP levels.
Sidetone level inside, sidetone frequency dip switches on top.
(Not really a problem with me.)
920 Pluses:
New design, has everything in menues, CTCSS tones, lower power
for QRP, 6 meters, dual controls for frequency and clarifier/dual watch,
dual band stacking registers, built in memory keyer and speech recorder,
CW tone control, built in DSP
920 Minuses:
Needs separate 13.8 power supply
Both first dits shortened in CW.
Not as clean a transmitted signal as 990.
DSP is high pass/low pass, good for SSB, not as convenient as DSP59Y.
Limited IF filter selection, one CW and one SSB filter only.
Needs FM board and AM board for their use.

What it comes down to is if you want/need latest and modern features get
the 920, otherwise 990/DSP59Y combo is great. My most missed features
from my FT-840 is QRP power level settings and dual band stacking
registers.
Also the DSP59Y from Great River Electronics at $210 shipped is a great
value in my estimation. I plan to keep my FT-990/DSP59Y al least for now.
I also have a FT-747GX for portable/mobileQRP/spare rig and hope to add
a FT-890 or FT-900CAT to stable next year. Hope this is of some help.
Any further questions, get back to me.
73,
Darryl, KK5IB
