You'll love the 990 and computer control is great!

I don't know if the Kenwood converter will work with the 990.  The pin outs
will clearly be different.
Get the Yaesu FIF-232 (look at hamfests for one cheep) or one of the thrid
party jobs. (Ramsey Electronics sells them)  They can be had for around $40
US.

Yes, CT, NA, TR, RTTY and most logging programs both DOS and Windows based.
I use Hyperlog with super results.

I've had my 990 long enough to have need to replace memory batt.  Super
radio for respectable cash.
