I didn't have a lot of time to play with it, so I simply reduced the IF gain by two notches from the menu and gave a listen around 10M. The background hiss was indeed reduced while maintaining normal sensitivity. Even more dramatic was the effect from installing the "bonus mod", a .0047 capacitor added to the audio board. In addition, if the EDSP noise reduction is turned on, it has a lot of audio hiss of it's own...this is something that the Timewaves have alway been VERY good at...removing the RX noise with their noise reduction mode. I'm kind of sorry I sold all mine for this very reason...it was especially useful with the older 1000's as they are even deader than the MP, and that extends from 10 through 20 meters! With a Timewave DSP in the line, the capacitor mod would probably also be unnecessary. I did install the INRAD 400hz 455 filters before the contest and was quite pleased with their performance. I initially went from 13 to 11 as suggested by INRAD, but the gain was still too much. Someone else recently posted a more scientific method of determining the value that produces the same gain, and I believe 9 was the final setting in his case. Anyone else come up with a different setting? I suppose that no two radios gain structures are exactly the same, so some variance is to be expected. -Paul -----Original Message----- From: WD8ARZ To: tgstewart@pepco.com ; Bob Patten Cc: Yaesu Reflector ; inrad@rosenet.net Date: Tuesday, June 02, 1998 10:50 AM Subject: Re: [Yaesu] FT-1000MP 70Mhz mod >Just qucik note, I will post a more detailed one later. I got the inrad mod on Monday via priority parcel post. I was pleased with INRAD sending me a email when they got my order, and another when it was shipped. Very nice of them! First thing I did was read the instructions and get a handle on the task to be done. Fortunatly its a easy install, just be very careful when putting in the plastic standoffs on the printed circuit board in the MP. If you use pliers and you slip, you can drag the tool across runs and damage them. The first thing I did was go to the AM broadcast band and find a stable signal that was less than S9 (so I could get a better spread of the smaller units used), I found one steady at a S7. I marked down the reading and the frequency. I removed the bottom cover, installed the INRAD board, and I left the bottom cover off. I hooked the radio back up, found the earlier reference signal, and dropped the Menu 9-1 setting until I got the same earlier reading. This took me from its factory setting of 13 down to a setting of 9. I then made up a arrangement where I could switch the INRAD amp in and out for comparision purposes. This allowed me to make checks hot while the radio was on..... so the comparisons were in real time with no delay. I dont recommend this to those that are not hot circuit savvy and dont know how to avoid circuit losses........ There is no doubt that the RF amp stage noise can now over ride the IF amp stage noise. I was concerned about front end overload, and worsening of the noise blanker splatter effect. I tuned all bands, and made in and out comparisons and did not determine any situation where the INRAS amp in line contributed to any known issues at this time. The end result is that the signal to noise ratio, noise blanker performance, syncronous a.m. mode, and over all audio for all modes is improved. I was surprised and very impressed with the improvment below 500khz! As the instructions also state, .... receiver which has better, more pleasing sound. I have to agree with that! I then played with 'by the ear' copy of weak signals on 10-20 meters that did not move the s meter. When I could not make out the words at a IF gain setting of 9, I started increasing. Some times IF gain of 10 did make an improvment, BUT on 40 meters and down, the noise energy made a setting of 9 better. Further more I determined that on weak power line interference, a IF gain of 11 or more made the noise blanker less effective. These same checks with the INRAD out of circuit proved the merits of the mod. Bottom line is I would say to do the mod as its worth the money..... Cant say that the hiss issue was that noticable to me before the mod, but the back ground noise is lower after the mod, and when I do the switching in and out procedure and setting the IF gain to the setting before the mod. The cw second mod did not seem to me to be worth the change for my radio..... I did live tests on signals with the cap in and out, could hear a difference, but not enough to bother with......especialy as the dsp did more than the cap did anyway......so for my radio, I did not add that capacitor. I prefer in the main receiver to have some higher cw passband in the audio so I can copy voice audio in cross mode operation. When I dont want that, I switch in the dsp...... so have the best of both worlds. Please note as it says in the instructions, this capacitor mod is for cw only, and even then only when the dsp is off. It has no other effect on the sound quality of other modes such as sideband or ssb. To find the capacitor referred to in the INRAD mod, locate ON THE INRAD amp board a capacitor numbered C3. Be on the side of the MP so that you can read the writing on the MP circuit board that the INRAS pcb is mounted on. About 3 inches to the right of this C3 cap on the MP pcb, is the cw modification target cap. Advise to those that think more is better. Turning up the Menu 9-1 to high for your radio over all system gain will only worsen the performance of the radio. Especially on Noise Blanker performance. It is my theory that the DSP will work better too because the energy in the pass band it is working with is improved, and there is more of the signal you want to hear and less of the noise. I actually now can hear in some situations the weak signal voice audio "stand out and up front" more than before the mod. I have not experienced that before the mod. I would get less listening fatige, and improve the intelligibility of a signal, but rarely make it 'stand out' as it does now...... so pushing the IF gain to high will begin to undo the improvements....... self control now guys, self control.... hi hi I post most of my information about the FT-1000MP to the dedicated email reflector at: http://jehosophat.com/1000mp/ My FT-1000MP is over one year old and has the following information: FT1000MP serial number: 7C170105 ( January of 1997) CPU Version leval: 1.30 Menu 9-8 Date: 970214c2 (Feburary 14, 1997) Good luck 73 from Bill - WD8ARZ wd8arz@null.net -- FAQ on WWW: http://www.qsl.net/k7on/yaesu.html Submissions: yaesu@contesting.com Administrative requests: yaesu-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-yaesu@contesting.com Search: http://www.contesting.com/km9p/search.htm From george@qnq.com Wed Jun 3 13:29:28 1998 From: george@qnq.com (George Gleim) Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 08:29:28 -0400 Subject: [Yaesu] Yaesu Feet (the older, silver, metal ones) Message-ID: <357541A7.C7FC5E1C@qnq.com> Greetings, I am trying to restore some ancient history Yaesu radios (FTDX, FLDX, FRDX, -400 series radios circa 1971-3?). Message-ID: <199806061927.NAA03492@gis.usu.edu> Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone has experienced problems cloning between FT-51R HTs after doing the MARS/CAP mod? I just mod'd one of my FT-51Rs, and had saved it's contents into another beforehand so I wouldn't have to enter all the frequencies and labels again. Well, the mod seems to behave fine, but when I try to clone the data back into the radio, I get "CLONE ERR" on the radio, and it will NOT accept the data. The other thought was, if this mod affects cloning between radios, does it also affect the ADMS-1 software, so I can't download from a PC? I was thinking of buying the ADMS-1 software, but it would be pretty worthless if it wouldn't download into the HT now. When I called Yaesu tech support, they said they thought that the ADMS software would still work, but were pretty mum about talking about the radio since the mod was done. Basically they said that since I mod'd the radio, I was on my own. Not the most helpful attitude. 73 de Andrew, KC7OZS -- FAQ on WWW: http://www.qsl.net/k7on/yaesu.html Submissions: yaesu@contesting.com Administrative requests: yaesu-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-yaesu@contesting.com Search: http://www.contesting.com/km9p/search.htm From timhopkinspyc@hotmail.com Sun Jun 7 05:32:29 1998 From: timhopkinspyc@hotmail.com (Tim Hopkins) Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 21:32:29 PDT Subject: [Yaesu] YAesu 757 Message-ID: <19980607043229.12755.qmail@hotmail.com> Will Not recive on band but Will Tx on all Bands does Any one Know what the Problem could Be If so Please mail me At timhopkinspyc@hotmail.com Kc4eow Marion timhopkinspyc@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- FAQ on WWW: http://www.qsl.net/k7on/yaesu.html Submissions: yaesu@contesting.com Administrative requests: yaesu-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-yaesu@contesting.com Search: http://www.contesting.com/km9p/search.htm From KF0FX@aol.com Sun Jun 7 15:00:14 1998 From: KF0FX@aol.com (KF0FX@aol.com) Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 10:00:14 EDT Subject: [Yaesu] FT-51R cloning after MARS/CAP mod? When you clone, data in addition to the channels is transmitted. This data includes stuff like the hardware configuration of the radio. I would suspect that when you clone, you need two radios with the same configuration. The ADMS software requires you to create a template of each radio you program. This template contains the radio-specific information. If you alter the radio, you need a new template. This template is combined with the modified channel information and is then sent to the radio as if the PC were another radio in the clone mode. 73's Chris, KF0FX KF0FX@aol.com -- FAQ on WWW: http://www.qsl.net/k7on/yaesu.html Submissions: yaesu@contesting.com Administrative requests: yaesu-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-yaesu@contesting.com Search: http://www.contesting.com/km9p/search.htm From webmaster@mbcc.net Sun Jun 7 18:41:04 1998 From: webmaster@mbcc.net (Bill Marcus) Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1998 13:41:04 -0400 Subject: [Yaesu] FT-51R cloning after MARS/CAP mod? Message-ID: <199806071925.NAA04318@landrew.usu.edu> Re: problems cloning from unmod'd FT-51R to mod'd FT-51R... As Chris and others have already mentioned, the radios must be identically configured (hardware modification wise) for the clone function to operate. So, if you mod one radio, you need to mod them both or you will no longer be able to clone between them. In my case, another local ham has the ADMS-1D software and cable, so I was able to try it, and after creating the correct "template" for each radio (and selecting that template during the "send to radio" dialog), I was able to use the ADMS software to retrieve the settings from one radio and transfer them to the mod'd one. Now, if Yaesu would only convince RT Systems (the software developer apparently) to add "shortcut-keys" to all the various fields that can be set for each memory channel or option, it would be perfect. In any case, looks like I'll buy the ADMS-1 software, as it is a better way to program these radios then the old keypad and dial! From fsr567@sk.sympatico.ca Mon Jun 8 01:45:37 1998 From: fsr567@sk.sympatico.ca (Ken) Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 18:45:37 -0600 Subject: [Yaesu] FS: FTV-901R transverter Message-ID: <000001bd9276$c15c74a0$253da58e@rocket-1> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0001_01BD9244.76C204A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sent for Rick VE5BBT: ===================== The FTV-901R transverter matches the Yaesu FT101Z and FT901 rigs but will work with others as well. Message-ID: <00b701bd9a45$b1dccb20$14ad5ec0@pclane.glerl.noaa.gov> I'm sure the CAT function in the FT-847 does what it was designed to do. It's just that it should have been designed to do more. The contest and logging software I have used (NA, CT and LogEQF) allow you enter frequency information from either the keyboard or the radio. The ability of the radio to report it's VFO and mode registers permits the radio and software to remain synchronized. Otherwise, during the "heat of battle" in a contest I'm quite sure this synchronization could be easily lost which would cause a major headache when trying to troubleshoot the logs later. Although the intent of the FT-847 is probably not as a full boogie HF contest radio it certainly is a contender for VHF contesting. Personally, the only use I have for the computer interface to a radio is in the context of logging (contest or otherwise). In this regard Yaesu made a goof in eliminating the status dump command. I hope they correct this in future upgrades to the radio OS. Actually Yaesu needs to revise their entire CAT command structure so that individual registers (as in ICOM and Kenwood) can be uploaded. The status dump from my FT-1000 is over 1K which is far more info than is really needed and is the only way to retrieve VFO data. W8KX This is NOT true. However due to the nature of the note in the owners manual for the FT-1000MP about not touching the VR6812 pot, and yet how easy it is to accidently change it while making other acceptable adjustments, I have relented and will provide the calibration information as it relates to this function. The following adjustment information comes from the FT-1000MP service manual. This manual is a seperate purschase from Yaesu. On page 3-11 of the service manual the location of the mysterious do not touch VR6812 pot is ided as a Tuning Meter Center Preset. This same page has calibration information for the Tuning Meter for CW, RTTY and PKT mode. The DC voltmeter is specified as a "Digital DC Voltmeter (high-Z, 1Mohm/v).Alignment Preparation at the begining of the service manual it says: Except where specified otherwiise, the transeiver should be tuned to 14.2000 MHz, USB mode, and these controls set as indicated: * MOX, VOX, AGC, PROC, IPO, ATT OFF * MIC & RF PWR fully CCW (minimum) * AR as required * SQL fully CCW (minimum) * NOTCH & SHIFT to 12-o'clock Please read fully before performing. Not responsible for adverse affects, or lack of results. I have put the word (reconcider) next to items that you should leave as it is even though 'at This Point In The Manual' that is the direction given. I am not sure if later in the service manual these designated items are adjusted different from the presets given. Because these items did not appear as adjustments to make following the preset operations, I would suggest leaving them to the factory settings unless you know what you are doing. Most of them are common sense and/or user preferable settings. The next page in the manual goes onto Main Receiver Signal Circuitry. Adjustments are located under the hatch cover on the top right of the FT1000MP case. PKT Receiver AF Level Preset * Preset VR3010 fully clockwise. (reconcider) Key beeper level preset * Preset VR3001 fully counter-clockwise. (reconcider) Headphone Output Level Preset * Preset VR6801, VR6802, VR6803 and VR6804 to their 12-o'clock postiions. (reconcider) Tuning Meter Center Preset * Preset VR6809~VR6812 to their 12 o'clock positions. Select CW mode, and turn the SPOT function on. * Connect the DC voltmeter to JW6803, and adjust the PITCH control for at least 4.0v on the DC voltmeter. * Connect the DC voltmeter to JW6804, and adjust the VR6811 for 2.7V + or - 0.1V on the DC voltmeter. * Adjust VR6812 for a centered tuning meter indicaiton. Tuning Meter Preset (CW, RTTY, and PKT mode) * Recall menu function 3-5 and select "A1-PitcH" using the MAIN VFO-A knob. Tune to 700hz using the PITCH knob ("C-700" displayed). * Select CW mode, press the SPOT key, and adjust VR6811 for a centered tuning meter indication. * Select menu function 4-2, select RTTY mode, and tune to 2210 Hz using the MAIN VFO-A knob. * Select "bEEP-tun" using the SUB VFO-B knob, and adjust VR6810 for a centered tuning meter indication. * Tune a 2125 Hz beep frequency using the MAIN VFO-A knob, and select PKT mode. Select "bEEP-tun" using the SUB VFO-B knob, and adjust VR6809 for a centered tuning meter indication. VOX gain, ANTI TRIP and delay preset * Preset VR6805 (DLY), VR6806 (ANTI TRIP) AND VR6808 (VOX GAIN) to their 12-o'clock positions. The owners manual has information for setting up the tuning meter for other frequencies used in the digital modes, as well as some of the other adjustments that you would be expected to adjust from time to time. With out doing further research in to the owners manual ( which I dont plan on doing at this time), this is all the information available in this section of the service manual about the above items. ......and before you say it, yes I agree this information should have been provided in the owners manual due to the function of the pot we are supposed to leave alone, and the impact on the digital mode indications. I have a few questions and observations- if you would be so kind to post this, I would be grateful. Observations: 1. The sensitivity of the radio on 50mhz, 144mhz and 430/440 mhz is incredible- more sensitive than the fabled IC970. I was able to track CW carriers on my ssg down to .01, and .005uvs on 144/440 and .015uvs on 6meters SSB.-in some cases with and WITHOUT the preamp in line. 2. The audio and fm discriminator meter is great. Fantastically listenable Questions: Does Anybody know: Why the radio needs the pre-amp in line to pick-out a cw carrier on 1.853mhz usb and at least at a .02uv signal cw when the 2m/440 section can pick out a .01uv signal or less without using the preamp?!!! Im wondering if this is how others find this radio to perform or is there(sadly) something wrong with my particular 847 I purchased. I would be grateful for a reply to this- and if anyone could take a few moments to test this rig on their ssg for similar observations... If others find this to be true, then it is a decent performer on HF and a superhuman performer on VHF- or is it just my rig? MEcker1447@aol.com 2. Is there any info about the alignment menu settings- eg: IF Gain- etc.... and does the setting differ based on the current band reading in the display or VHF/vs HF or HF vs 50mhz vs 440 vs 144.... or whichever.... am dying to know the answer to any info tinkerers have discoverd about the alignment menu- and why are there almost 150 sublevels of gain adjustment when entering this menu on say, 160meters- is this a gain controll with 150 levels? Holy COW!!!! THats a lot of adjustments for just one menu item- I notice the VHF menus for IF gain are separate also could someone tell me what their 847 IF's are set for on each band- there are some numbers and some alpha-numeric levels also.... Because the quiet noise levels will be upwards of a microvolt. 30 or 40 db above the receiver noise... What are you using for a signal generator? Many at VHF aren't that well shielded and leak fractions of a microvolt. Which leads to misleading attenuator readings especially on ssb or CW receiver modes. On any band you need IF gain only to the point that the front end noise (or antenna) noise sets the threshold. Any more gain and you run into worse intermod problems in mixers and broad band first IF stages. OK .. the question - the CW sidetone out of the FT1000 leaves a LITTLE to be desired (IMO) - several '1000's that I have listened to have a very slightly "ploppy" sound, mine included. Has anyone "tweaked" things to improve it ?? OK, I can live (just) with the fixed preset frequencies (the 930 was variable) but the note is NOT as "clean" or "T9X" as the 930 sidetone.
