You might be better off with a battery case filled with ordinary NiCd's
that you can buy separately. That way, if a cell dies, you just replace
it. It's quick, cheap etc. And you can do some serious quick
overcharge/overload and other over-torture to the battery, there's
nothing to loose except some cheap(?) NiCd cells, not the whole (not
very cheap?) batt pack.
I know manufacturer doesn't recommend it, there is no temp and
shortcircuit protection this way, but I do it anyway, no problems yet.
You're on your own (risk) though :(
