[Yaesu] FT990 hearing prob

Hi gang, 
i have a query about my FT990, if I zero beat on a CW signal at about an S7
using the 2.4 or 2K filter then hit the 500hz filter the sig will drop to
around an S2. I`ve found I`m having trouble hearing weak sigs using the 500
or 250Hz filters, but if I use the 2k filter then use the switched audio
filter to narrow the audio bandwidth then all is ok, until someone fires up
withing 2KHz with a strong sig, hi. 
Too much attenuation through the 500kz filter?
It doesnt seem right to me.
