[Yaesu] RIT Function?

N4BP asked about the RIT control as his has developed the classic
jumping problem. Presumably this is on an MP, but would be valid for other
recent vintage Yaesu rigs & no doubt others.

The control is an optical device & if I recall correctly from a previous life
when I fixed equipment that used similar controls, the phase of the pulses
between the two outputs indicates direction & the pulses are counted to
determine how much it's been rotated. The behavior of the fault I've seen
is such that the jump is always in the direction the knob is turning, so it
might have to do with extra pulses coming as a result of gunk floating
around inside it, or probably more likely flaky LEDs or detectors inside.

I didn't see how one could do much of anything to fix the device used
when I replaced mine. It's quite a bit of a dig to get to it on the MP & I'm
annoyed that having replaced it once, mine's jumping around again!

The component used in my MP looked very much like the one for the RIT
in an OMNI-6 I once had that had acted up, so me thinks there's a bad
batch out there from the manufacturer of the component.
