Subject: [Yaesu] FT-1000D Diversity Success
Message-ID: <3B1AD8A6.28865.CB5FC1E@localhost>
After buying my FT-1000 I became interested in doing some
polarization diversity receiving with two antennas. As a quick
check, I tried the Yaesu with my Kenwood TS-930 on 30
meters, using a high horizontal dipole plus a 225ft 'cone
of silence' optimum length Beverage. Results were quite
encouraging, so I went ahead and bought a BPF-1 unit for
the Yaesu. I also added the 600Hz filter for the sub-rx, which
really is essential for CW work. Diversity adds a wonderful
'presence' to received signals which is hard to describe-
it must be experienced first-hand. The improvement in
intelligibility is well worth the effort it takes to get it. I was
quite pleased with the results, so I added the G-mod which
allows tuning both main and sub-receivers around the band
using only the main VFO. The SPOT switch is adapted for
switching this feature in and out. Another mod I definitely plan
to do is the one by K0FF, which regains the capability for
the main rx to listen on the Beverage antennas when a BPF-1
has been installed (and also for the sub-rx to listen on the
main rx/tx antennas, even on different bands). There are not
many ham transceivers on the market that have a totally
separate sub-receiver, from separate antenna jacks all the
way through to separate audio channels. Tuning up and down
the bands in true diversity mode is a real treat! Now I am
'spoiled' by it, and single-channel, single-antenna signals
have a muffled or 'muddy' sound by comparison. Note that
some ham transceivers have sub-receivers but share the
bandpass filters or even an IF strip. Only with the added BPF-1
is the FT-1000 able to do true antenna diversity. (How does the
MP handle this?)
My observation is that diversity is especially worthwhile for the
low bands, 30, 40, 80, and 160 meters. If two antennas are
available and both can hear a signal reasonably well, your ear-
brain filter will take care of the rest, even with fairly different
signal levels between the two. Probably using two antennas
of opposite polarization will give the best results, but using
space diversity with antennas of the same polarization might
also provide some improvement in intelligibility. I was surprised
to learn that some FT-1000 owners have the BPF but do not use
it much; also some do not use the radio's DUAL function, but
rather seem to treat the separate sub-rx mainly as a remote
VFO for split transmitting, or perhaps as just another memory.
While in diversity mode, you can still use the CLARifier in the
radio for rx/tx splits up to 10KHz- this should cover many or
even most split transmit situations encountered, though certainly
not all of them. For very crowded or noisy band conditions, one
of the narrower Inrad filters in the sub-rx would be a good idea.
So far, I have only had one incident where I felt that the sub-rx
cw IF was too wide. For now, I plan to deal with that problem
using my Timewave DSP-599zx in the sub-rx audio channel.

Message-ID: <20010603.200808.-327971.1.john-k1rc@juno.com>
Hi All,
Please Pardon my post to so many lists.
Just recently I saw a post from someone who was
looking for microphone to transceiver adapters.
I lost the message, so if the person(s) looking for
the adapter is still needing same, pls e-mail me direct
if one of the adapters fills the bill.
I've just found (while going through an old footlocker
of parts in the garage) the following Mic Adapters:
* 2 each: MJ-84 8-pin mic to 4-pin radio adapter.
* 2 each: MJ-86 8-pin mic to 6-pin radio adapter.
They were originally packaged in Kenwood blister
packs, but I only kept one adapter info card in order
to save space while packing the footlocker.
73 and again, thanks for letting me post to the lists.

I just want to give credit for the "G-mod" which allows the FT-1000
main and sub-receivers to be ganged to the main VFO (encoder)-
to its author Robin, G3TKF. This is a very slick mod that adds a
lot of functionality for one simple DPDT 5V relay. Thanks also to
VE7RF for identifying the designer.
The mod is well within the capabilities of experienced ham builders,
but is probably not for everyone- it is certainly not one that can
be obtained by sending your radio to Yaesu. I will plan to draw out
a schematic and pictorial drawing of my implementation. I came up
with a fully connectorized version, to avoid making any changes to
the radio's internal wiring harness. Since the SPOT switch is used,
one PC board track cut is unavoidable- this is fully reversible by a
simple soldered wire jumper if needed later. For CW ops, the spot
function is also available at the tap of your key, making the SPOT
switch superfluous. Just make sure your VOX switch is off. :o)
I will plan to make these details available later through my web
page in case anyone else is interested in the details.

Hi Yaesu - Owners !
I think the Yaesu price for the DVS-2 voice recorder is far away
from reality. Now I am looking to start a project to build my own.
I found one possible solution here:
http://www.qsl.net/va3cr/main/poor%20mans%20dvs2.html
I am also looking into designs with the ISD 1400 Series
ChipCorder.
Before I start to reinvent the wheel again - I'll give it a try to ask
here if someone has already experience and/or designs for it ?
Maybe you are intrested helping to work on that Project ?
Here are the goals so far:
Price should be much less than 100 dollar
Audio quality must cope with the DVS-2
Design should be slimm and smart (not bigger than DVS-2)
Connection via FT-1000MP's DVS-2 Port (Mike port optional)
The layout should be professional made on a single board
Components should be easy available
Any comments - ideas - anything ...... more than welcome.

Subject: [Yaesu] FT-1000D 'Synchro' Mod
Message-ID: <3B225C6C.17130.DBFCBC@localhost>
I have done the synchro mod to my 'nearly-D' FT-1000 radio and
am delighted with the results. I want to thank Robin, G3TKF, for
coming up with this very useful circuit improvement. Using a
reconfigured SPOT switch, the mod allows the Main VFO
(encoder) to tune both the main and the sub-receivers
simultaneously. It can be applied to any FT-1000/D, but would
appeal especially to those who have the BPF-1 option and want
to do antenna diversity work running two antennas through two
entirely separate receivers at the same time. Note that these
comments do not apply to either the MP or the Mark V. This
mod is definitely not for beginners, although hams with some
homebuilding experience should do fine with it. This mod is not
sanctioned by Yaesu or available through them.
It has been an enjoyable experience to try diversity for the first
time using various antenna combinations on both the low bands,
30 meters and below, and the high bands. Both polarization
diversity and space diversity have been tried (usually height
diversity with different horizontally polarized antennas). My
results have been quite encouraging and I intend to pursue this
further.
I have added a sub-page about the FT-1000D and this mod on my
website. At this point it includes 3 photos and a brief description
of the wiring. I will add more information later. If you are interested
in using your FT-1000 in this way, you might want to bookmark
this page and revisit later for more details:

Hello,
Does anyone know how to wire this? I'd like to make a backup cord much shorter than the factory supplied one. Looks like it uses four conductors, but neither the manual nor the schematics discuss the wiring of the power connector. I have a FT-757 that has a strange wiring for the power connector and that is detailed in the manual, but not for the 840.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like it uses four conductors, but neither the manual nor the schematics discuss the wiring of the power connector. I have a FT-757 that has a strange wiring for the power connector and that is detailed in the manual, but not for the 840.

Yes, I think it does. Thanks! However, I'm wondering if it's just a simple case of jumpering over to make two positives and two negatives. My only other real experience with a Yeasu HF rig is the 757 and I know that with that there is the normal positive and negative terminals, and the other two are merely jumpered together with no other connection to power. So, if it's just a case of splitting/jumpering to make two positives and two negatives, I'm a little confused by the simplicity. :-)

Hi again
I should have been a bit more detailed.
The two heavy wires red & black are split and shrink wrapped
inside the red hood of the connector to make Y's on the end.

Hi Folks,
My elmers FT980 ran for 4hrs today. I'm talking to him now on 160m. He
tells me his cooling fan on the FT980 come on and stays on. On my FT900
and FT1000D the fans cycle.
Is the FT980 fan supposed to cycle as well? I would think yes.
Wondering what the problem could be...

Message-ID: <20010621040723.15199.cpmta@c000.snv.cp.net>
Howdy again,
Thanks so much to everyone who replied to my previous question concerning the wiring of the FT-840 power cord. Now I have another question about it. I assumed it was a regular six-conductor Molex connector. I got one from Radio Shack, but found out that it isn't exactly right. The Radio Shack one expects a hollow rectangle with pins and the 840 female expects holes with pins in the middle. Is this connector difficult to find? I checked MCM Electronics and didn't see it there. I make patch power cords for emergency operations. It makes it easier to mix and match power sources (battery, cig. lighter, etc.).
Thank you for any info...

Go get a Kenwood radio if you want to do remote. The command set is much
better and the radios are much more controllable. TS-570 is a good
bargain.
Elecraft will be the best bet in 6 months.

Up until the recent announcement (out of the hf business), Kachina had/has
the best turn key solution. I was running one for the last couple of years.
Its been dismantled as I'm moving to a qth that allows towers.
I agree with Bill on Kenwood, much more condusive for remote control. Also
check out TRX manager at http://www.trx-manager.com. There is some
discussion on remote stations there using vhf/uhf for audio and TRX for rig
control.
I used isdn modems for complete rig control as well as audio in both
directions. While it worked quite well, I think I would have been happier
with some sort of vhf/uhf link for better audio quality.
PCanywhere worked for me with some control of my Acom amplifier. Another
package is called Remote Administrator. It appeared to work a bit faster (as
far as screen refresh's).

Thanks! As a last ditch effort I went to Gateway Electronics to see if they had a connector. One of the guys there took one look at the rig and said that someone else had been in the day before looking for the same connector. He also said that they did not have the right one. Meanwhile, I've just wired the original power cord into my fuse box (not the car's fuse box... I ran #8 wire from the battery to my own fuse box. I take power from my radios from that. Sure beats running wire for each radio back to the battery). The $15 price from R&L was less than any of the others I'd found.

Subject: [Yaesu] FT-1000D Diversity and the G3TKF Synchro Mod
Message-ID: <3B3511E4.752.E109D64@localhost>
There is a simple mod applicable to the FT-1000 equipped with
the BPF-1 option, or to any FT-1000D, which allows the main
tuning knob to control both main and sub receiver frequencies
simultaneously. It requires little more than a DPDT 5V relay,
and can be done entirely 'no holes'. I would like to thank Robin,
G3TKF, for originating this very uesful circuit. Anyone interested
can find a fairly complete writeup of the mod in a 3-page series at:
http://www.angelfire.com/md/k3ky/page61.html
The last page, which may be of more general interest, describes
my early experiences using antenna diversity on all HF bands,
160-10 meters:
http://www.angelfire.com/md/k3ky/page63.html
Regarding the general subject of field modifications and Yaesu
'factory' service, I would like to hear from owners who have sent
radios with mods to Yaesu for service. I have heard accounts of
hams receiving their rigs back from Yaesu with all the non-
factory-originated mods pulled out. Is this accurate or not? Just
a minor concern to me, but I am curious. Please reply directly
to my email address and I will summarize answers received if
that is warranted. 73, David K3KY

Yes, this is perfectly normal. When I first got mine I thought there was something wrong with it as well. FWIW, there is a list on YahooGroups just for the VX5R called YaesuVX5. I've been on it for more than a year, and it is a font of information about this particular rig.

Hello all:
I am new to this list and just recently purchased a Yaesu FT767GX.
I love the rig, but I am starting to have a problem with the transmit.
After about 6 or 7 short transmission the transmit will quit completely.
This is operating at under 100 watts. The receive still operates as it =
should.
The heat sink is warm, but not what could be called uncomfortable to
touch. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
73 and thanks,
Bob...ve3crm
