[Yaesu] FT990 - very ill

On Thursday night before WW SSB my FT990 died...was getting  the rigs 
and computers all set up for the contest and all seemed fine - then 
suddenly there was a high pitched sqeal...

As it was on its departure from the functioning world I heard clicks and 
high pitched audio coming from the cans...

The digital display is not working at all and the "radio stuff" is not, 
either....

It did not blow the fuse however since the S Meter lamp is on...but it 
seemed pretty major!

Have you had a similar experience - before I decide which other goodie 
to sell to cover my expense for repair of the 990 which I enjoy very 
much I was wondering if mebbe you had a similar experience and what kind 
of financial damage you encountered.

I am wondering what could have been so severe but did not take out the fuse!
