Edward,
I would have to second the idea that something is loading
down your FT-101B when you are in transmit mode.
It's a tough call to make when the rig is there and we are over here !!
Hee Hee...
I belive you will find that RED VFO lamp on the front panel is
running off the 6 volt supply from the power supply board which stands
up against the PA housing. The older FT-101B model used a 6 volt
regulator that is hard to find now. Hopefully it's not the case.

Oh !! This just came to mind. Possibly operator error.
Here is the thought and PLEASE don't think me trying to downgrade
your abilities to operate your rig. I've jsut been running FT-101's for
the
better part of my amateur life. Check the VFO mode switch just to the
left of the dial. Make sure it is in the INT -- Internal position.
If it is in the RX - Receive external then the lamp would light when
you were in Transmit and the external VFO Red LED would light on
receive. JUST OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU ARE SEEING.

Now if the switch is in TX Ext.... Transmit External, then the
symptom would be the same as what you have. When you key
the microphone the rig would attempt to transfer the 6 volts over to
the External VFO for transmit thus lighting the VFO light on the
external VFO and the light would go out on the transceiver.
If the little marking on that knob is missing, then just grab it and
swing it counter clockwise into the INT position.

It's possible the rig is just fine, if the later is the case.
I hope that is of some help to you.
Regards
Carol Maher
