[Yaesu] FT-990 EPROMUpgrade

Being a total newbie and being in the process of computer controlling my 
FT-990, what does the EPROM v.1.3 (which mine has) allow one to do that an 
older model would not.

BTW, to computer control the rig is there a specific jack that is needed to 
connect to a laptop or desktop??
