[Yaesu] Removing FT1000D Main Tuning Knob

I have two FT1000D that both have the same problem.  I can't get the main
tuning knob to come off.

I have removed the rubber ring and gained access to the set screw.  In
loosening the set screws, they came out completely.  I was able to get them
out through the hole in the knob.

However, both knobs show no sign of moving at all.  I am afraid to pull too
hard.

Any suggestions?  Everything I have read implies that loosening the set
screw should have made the knob easy to remove.  What am I missing?
