Good info...

I also noticed something that may need to be considered as well.  The 
service manual exploded diagram for the fan shows it to be shock mounted in 
foam strips.  I assume to keep the transmission of noise to the chassis and 
ultimately to your ear.  If these foam pads have deteriorated and collapsed 
it's possible the fan is coupling noise and vibration to the chassis making 
it sound quite noisy.

Just some thoughts...
