I don't know about the serial number, but you can see the software ROM 
version by  holding  the "1" and "3"
keypad buttons down at the same time that power is turned on. This puts 
the radio through a self-test and ends by displaying "YAESU" and
the ROM version. Also known as the Las Vegas display...
