[Yaesu] PSK31 Keying question with FT897

I have an FT897

I have the Cat inteface installed

I want to use PSK31, using Ham Radio Deluxe, and use the Cat interface to
key the rig, but pass sound to the data port via a sound card

I built a cable from the HRD manual to get audio from the rig and get audio
to the rig thru the data port

audio is coming out of the computer (I can hear it with headphones), the rig
is keying, I can decode the other side of the contact but I can't contact
anyone, I don't think the rig is getting the audio

questions are:

1 - how do I verify if the sound it actually getting on the air?

2 - if I key rig with the CAT interface, will the rig take the audio from
the data jack? or do I have to key the rig thru the data jack for it to take
audio from the data jack?

Thanks
KD8EZS
