[Yaesu] Yaesu serial numbers

I have researched enough to figure out most of the serial number scheme.
However I can't find the answer to one question.
I understand that the first number represents the year it was made..  If a model
is in production for more than ten years, how to you tell which decade it was
made.
For example, if a FT-736R has a serial number start with 7 or 8, how do you tell
if it is 1987-8 or 1997-8?
