[Yaesu] FT-1000MP Mk V drift problem

Recently my FT1000MP Mk V (200W version) developed a strange fault.
All of a sudden the main VFO starts drifting down in frequency, just
as if the radio was scanning. The Sub VFO is not affected by this drift.

If I transmit the frequency drift stops for the full transmit cycle
and by listening to my transmission on another radio I can hear that
the frequency is rock stable. But when I go back to receive the VFO
continues to drift down in frequency. Eventually the little green
"Main Busy" icon will drop out and I loose receive the receiver
completely,. This icon dropout behavior is somewhat intermittent
during the drift sessions.

Moving the VFO shuttle jog ever so slightly clockwise will stop the
drift, and if I move it further clockwise the VFO will start going up
in frequency. But as soon as I let the shuttle jog back to normal
(idle) position the drift down in frequency continues.

Toggling the power switch on/off has brought the rig back to normal
in most cases, but the problem re appears after a while. Pressing the
"Lock" button for the main VFO will not stop the drift.

I read on the (excellent) VA3CR FT1000MP site that a possible problem
might be a cable connected to the shuttle jog being to close to
ground. But as I also intermittently loose the receiver as the "Main
busy" icon drops out I think that the problem is not just the shuttle
jog. When the drift is not there the shuttle jog works as the manual says.

Anyone out there who has experienced this with an MP and can point me
in the right direction to find the fault?

The rig has been in my possession since it was brand new, so I know
for a fact that this problem has never occurred before and no one but
me has tampered with the radio :-)
