Gab: This was our warmup for the WPX multi later this month. On Friday
before the test, we removed a broken 5L 20m beam, and replaced it with a
rebuilt one, at 130'. Antenna work on the day of a contest is normal -
we didn't want to violate that long-standing tradition! Good thing we did
this job, because the lower antenna in the stack lost it's rotor on
Saturday and stayed fixed south the rest of the weekend. Two computer
failures and power line noise from 200' south of the station also slowed
us down. We had only three full-time ops (K6AW, N6BV, K3EST), but
managed to keep most of the critical seats filled throughout the weekend.
Noise on the low bands and not much EU propagation on 20, 40 and 80
hurt the mults, but we did fine to JA. We had great JA totals on 80 and
40, thanks to KM6F(JH1SBE) and WG6B(JH1GNU), who did our low band JA runs
on Saturday morning. Shige called us on 40/80 Sunday morning from home -
that's dedication to the team. N6BV exceeded my 15m projections by 35%
(over 1000 JAs!), and that was the key to making my overly-optomistic
goal of 6 Million points. I would have been happy with 4M! I personally
was very happy with the performance of the newly completed wire 4 Square
on 80m. Special thanks to K6AW and AE0M who kept our network going with
several computer replacements. Steve had about 2 hours sleep the whole
weekend - another IRON MAN at Radio Oakley. We broke the MM record for
W6, set in 1982, the first year Radio Oakley tried a multi-multi.
Overall, a great team weekend, and that's what multis are all about. CU
in WPX, N6RO. more numbers follow.........
