Comments:
Ran out a aprox 400m single wire beverage to the north. (over a corner of a cow
pasture, down thru the bean patch, over the farm road and back up over the corn
field to the top of the hill, over the domestic water tank and to a tree on top
of the ridge. I'm glad I had some rubber jungle boots for pulling the wire and
it took less that two hours to assemble. For a Colorado guy in the humid tropics
I needed a couple of the local Imperial brewskis muy fria after this). Ground
conductivity must be good in what used to be rain forest as a 50cm ground rod at
each end seemed to do the trick. We used the beverage for 100% of the QSOs. It
is the first time we've ever seen a beverage really work well. We'll have to
agree with ZF2NT that not being able to work DX to DX is a real deterent for DX
to enter this contest. It would also be more interesting for US stations if
there was more DX. The ARRL wonders what to do to increase participation! It
seems pretty simple to me and I ain't no rocket scientist. QSOs worked that we
could not count 3D2WW, XQ6ET, HP2XUG, GW3TMP, HK3BVD, LY3UM, OH2TM, GW3JXN,
GW3KGV plus some assorted DL and G. There were many more DX stations that called
that we did not work. ON4UN was heard along with many more Europeans. Rig, Icom
756PRO, Kenwood TL922 900w, Inverted V at 40m (130ft), 400+m beverage (K9VV
matching box(thanks fast fingers Freddie Fubar, it finally got used)). Operating
at Palmera station of TI5KD near Aguas Zarcas in the north central part of the
country at a farm on a hilltop about 200m HAAT. There is a great takeoff to US,
EU and JA. YN is visible on a rare clear day and we had two! It was also fun to
play on 75 SSB with the 2 el quad fixed at 30 degrees working Moscow with
ragchew quality on 100w. WL for logging. One glitch in that one QSO that was not
a dupe is in the log with a red X (where you'd see a red D for a dupe) to the
right of the QSO nr and the USA station (WK2G) was not counted and scored as
zero points! Even with the beverage there were many stations right at the ragged
edge that we just couldn't pull thru. It was really amazing how many times we
would ask for a repeat on the section and we would copy the person's call, which
we already had, 3 or 4 times and miss the section again on QSB. Thanks to all
that worked and tried to work us.
