Only one request: Bring back the sunspots!
Overall, the score is down a whopping 1.2 meg from last year due to poor 10m
conditions, and a spotty EU opening on 15m that made running difficult. 10m was
almost exclusively north/south with good signals from zones 11 and 13. The
exception to the north/south rule was ZD8Z who was loud everywhere.
15m was much better than expected with good JA runs and big signals from parts
of Europe. It seems the short daylight hours, coupled with a low SFI, favored
western EU like G, EA, CT and F stations. The EU?s farther east were very weak
and it was difficult to break their east coast pile-ups.
Total q?s on 40m is down about 100 from last year with three less countries, but
four more zones. Propagation to JA was fair, explaining the lower q total.
80m totals improved versus last year with three additional q?s, three more
countries, and one more zone. To date, this is the most EU?s ever worked on 80m
in a contest.
160m saw the biggest improvement over last year with twenty-eight additional
q?s, seven more countries, and two additional zones. The weeks leading up to
the contest brought incredible EU openings almost everyday. But what would
happen during the contest? Not much the first night, but the second night
yielded OZ1DD, SM5CEU, LY3UM and CU2CE with fine signals. UU7J was also loud,
but couldn?t hear me ? darn, my logging program indicated he was a double mult!
Like 80m, this represents the most EU?s ever worked in a contest on 160m.
The biggest challenge this year was being at the right place at the right time
to take full advantage of an opening. This was especially true for 80m and 160m
as propagation windows quickly opened and closed.
