Comments:
I operated this contest seriously only due to its position as the final
qualifier for WRTC 2010 in Russia. I am glad I did as it was very
entertaining.
Contest started great with an opening that seemed to stretch all the way across
Russia. Worked lots of valuable oblast multipliers and 10-point Russian
contacts. There were many times I could only sit and listen as there were so
many calling on exactly the same frequency!
The low bands were suprisingly good. It must have been quiet in Europe as they
seemed to hear well even on 160. Which is a good thing since a contact doesn't
count if all of the information isn't exchanged perfectly.
The sunrise enhancement on European signals was very noticeable. Some of the
Russian and Ukraine signals on 160 were amazing. Well over S9! Best signals
were usually 15-45 minutes ahead of sunrise.
80 meters stayed open more than 1.5 hours after sunrise. I called CQ on 75
meters at 0645z and couldn't believe the signal levels from Western Europe.
The same thing was true later on 40 meters. Not sure 40 ever completely closed
to Europe.
10 meters did open very well, but after sunset so there was no activity. Would
have missed it completely if not for packet.
This is the only contest all year where I use packet as a single op. Very
interesting to see all the things packet finds that I would miss without it.
Also disappointing to see the broken calls and bad behavior in packet generated
pileups.
Congratulations to the organizers of the RDXC for designing a contest that has
something for everyone.
