Comments:

An unexpected last minute change of plans gave me some Saturday free time so I
decided to dive in. Contesting is always "interesting" with just 100 watts and
a dipole. I checked out 15 and worked a handful of stations who were
surprisingly close. Then went to 20 where all of the action was. Later I
checked the higher bands and found one station on 10, plus a strange "pipeline"
on 15 from California to GA/FL. After S&Ping all the stations I could hear, I
decided to try CQing to see if any other Southeasters were lurking, but not
much luck. Tried a little running on 20, and to my surprise, I got a call from
E51CG down in Rarotonga, and then a call from a very loud NQ4I Aeronautical
Mobile about 600 miles out in the Pacific. Nice signal, probably from a
30,000+ foot "tower". It took me a little while to convince the logger that a
US call without a state was OK and it should stop complaining and get on with
it! Have to read that manual again - where's the "just do it" key? After it
finally got dark here by the Pacific, I ended up on 40 and then 80 with
everybody else. I worked the infamous HECTORAMON, and it seemed like a nice
neighborhood, so I set up shop about 4 Khz up and tried a run, which I rarely
do in most contests. It was nice not having to compete in a field filled with
kilowatts. Ran 75 or so stations on 80, which was fun but hard on the voice.
Guess I have to figure out the voice keyer. 80 was noisy, with about S9 levels
here, but the RX software in the Flex managed to keep the noise at bay so
copying names and calls was mostly easy. I spent the last 30 minutes on 40
with a short run, finally bumped off frequency by a lighthouse in Spain!
Looking forward to winter, when we have more dark time for 40 and 80. It was
fun, thanks for the Qs. 73, /Jack de K3FIV
