Comments:
Big score drop this week . . couldn't find the rhythm on 20, missing one jump
ball after another. The group seemed to adjust ok to the 6O0Cw pileups around
14040, but we were hemmed in by ARRL code practice at 14047.
As related by the Locust. . en route home from Bay Area last night across the
Mayacamas mountains our Audi A4 collided with a bottle jack that had apparently
dropped off a truck in front of us. XYL had just taken over the driving, and she
handled the situation beautifully. The bottle jack, for those who aren't
familiar, is a ~75 pound hunk of metal, sitting almost foot high on the road. .
it's a heavy equipment jack. It was lying dead center of the roadway, with a
guard rail close on the left and an oncoming car, unusual for that highway at
2230. So no option . grit your teeth and hit it straight on at 55 mph. As the
car is very low to the ground [Drives like a race car.] the impact was
staggering . . we may have been air-borne for a moment. The chunk of metal
grazed the radiator, and ripped a huge gash in the oil pan, and of course could
have damaged the drive shaft. Help arrived immediately, thanks to a young woman
Federal security officer from the nearby casino who had just missed it, and made
a U turn to return to warn other drivers. But not soon enough for us. Two
local Hopland CA police cars arrived within 3 minutes, followed by two Highway
Patrol, a fire engine crew to clean the oil and two tow trucks. All of these
folks were exemplary -- extremely courteous and helpful. So we rode back on a
flatbed tow truck and finally reached home well after midnight -- if you think
ham radio is expensive. this rig, a 2012 model with all the bells and
whistles, is $180,000. The driver/owner is a Native American from this area
whose daughter graduated Stanford on full-ride baseball scholarship.
