A Tower Disaster makes way for 'The Mult Hunter'
First, my thanks to John Evans, N3HBX for the use of his fine Super-station on
the Potomac. He has his station and gear primed and ready for each contest, a
first rate team owner.
After talking to the Top ARRL CW guys last month and sitting it out I felt to
take the seat for SSB; it was a last minute trip indeed. My thanks to Rich,
NN3W for coordinating.
CW guys will understand when I state that for me, SSB contests are typically
saved for multi environments with friends (typically somewhere warm and rare)
or the more recent efforts to make a showing for the WRTC qualifier runs.
Otherwise, you'll find me on CW duking it out with the Top 10 guys, mostly
causing interference and trailing in at 11th-31st! That said, I enjoyed the
thought of getting on the air and trying for the 4000 Q mark.
Conditions wouldn't allow that for me this year and in lieu of conditions
Murphy paid a visit this time offering a challenge and ultimately a
diversification handicap to the race. We experienced a mechanical failure
within the first 8 hours of the contest and lost the main tower forcing what I
hoped was only sole-temporary usage of the multiplier antennas. After all, the
big morning runs where the bulk of my Q's awaited.
I emailed Mr. Evans my suspicions on Mr. Murphy's handy work at 3am local time
and just after sunrise he arrived on the grounds to survey the station, the
feed lines and the tower mechanics (in his boots, in 20F temps and a foot or
more of snow) and he quickly determined the Main Tower inoperable for the
duration.
In that moment, I realized the new goal was fun-factor and set out to have much
more fun with the only mandate to have the top multiplier, enjoy proper meals,
quality rest and routine showers that may not be typical in our contesting
circles.
Relaxed, rested and had a great time, and the 243/hour was fun too.
