Comments:

I had planned to operate this contest with my college roommate from 1960 and
others from his house (Harbour Rock) on Provovidenciales, Turks and Caymans
Islands, M/S Low Power, as we have done the pat three years. The pandemic came
along and flights were canceled just after we returned home after doing the ARRL
DX SSB Contest in March. So, I planned to operate as close to full time as
possible from my home station on a city lot SOABHP. Both amps went out before
the contest. One is back at the factory for repairs and the other needs to be
sent for repairs (the T/R relay seems to be failing and doesn't return to
receive most times after transmitting). So, the new plan was to do the same
thing, only low power with my TS590SG. Then two days before the contest
started, I received a message asking if I wanted to operate this contest
remotely as PJ4/K4BAI from our station on Bonaire. I had operated it remotely
for CQ 160 CW in January this year, courtesy of BeLoud.us and thanks to computer
and technical assistance from Jeff, KU8E. W1MD had planned to do this contest,
but during pre contest practice, it developed that his computer had a problem
and he had to cancel. Jeff was willing to help with the technical and computer
aspects and to host me at his house to operate remotely from there. I have only
recently got high speed internet at my house and none of the necessary programs
have been loaded to my own computers. It was too late to get a short contest
call, so I was resigned to use PJ4/K4BAI. I did sign that call no less often
than once every three QSOs and on every QSO when there seemed to be no one
waiting. Thanks again to BeLoud (WW4LL and W9SN) and to Jeff and to Noah, K2NG,
the station owner. Everything went very well until Saturday afternoon when the
signals disappeared. The SWR was also infinite after the signals disappeared so
it wasn't caused by an eruption on the Sun, which was my first thought since
sunspots had been reported on the other side of the sun which were expected to
be seen during the contest. The BeLoud folks and Noah tried mightily to find
and repair the problem at the station, but were unable to. So, it was a
promising start, but fell far short of a full time operating event. Thanks
again to WW4LL, K2NG, and KU8E. Hopefully the problem can be found and repaired
soon, but with travel to the island closed to US citizens and severely limited
to all others, it will be difficult for some time for someone to go there and do
the repairs. Jeff and I plan to operate the station in person for CQ WW CW this
year as we have many years, but that may not be possible this year either due to
the pandemic. As I said, no US citizens may deplane on the island and even
citizens who have been abroad must submit to a 14-day quarantine after arrival.
Oh well, all we can do is to do our best with what we have. Thanks for all QSOs
and sorry for those who didn't get through before the abrupt QRT. I have plenty
of blank QSL cards. Send me a return envelope and the QSO information for a
direct QSL card (postage appreciated). For a bureau QSL (we assume
international mail and QSL bureaus will eventually be able to resume operation)
and I will prepare a bureau QSL for you. 73, John, K4qBAI.
