Thanks to Paul W1IMD for the use of the station and to Joe K1JB and Mike K1EU
for the use of the club call - W1OO.
I spent about an hour and a half on Friday night but the turmoil of 40 meter SSB
was too much. Knocked off early.
Up early Saturday before dawn. The beam at W1IMD is up about 300 feet and is an
excellent band opener on 20m. I started working stations right away with
reports of being the strongest signal from North America. I found a frequency
and ran for about 20 minutes netting 50 QSOs. What a thrill! As the band
opened up the advantage of the high antenna diminished a bit and I became one of
the many strong signals.
I never could find an open frequency to start running again, but there were
plenty of S&P signals and the rate was almost as high for those.
I knocked off at 10 am to go with my wife to get our second COVID vaccination.
It was a two-hour drive and by the time we got home we were starting to feel the
effects. The rest of Saturday and all Sunday was spent feeling tired and sore
and achy. I could never fire up to get back to the contest. If it had been a
CW contest I might have returned, but an SSB contest felt like too much work.
