The debate about rectifier diodes in recent days has focused attention
on HV power supplies. This begs the question as to why amplifier
manufacturers and hams who build their own have not turned their
attention to designing and building HV switching supplies.
Components for this type of supply are available. A switching supply has
much less weight than its linear counterpart leading to a more compact
amplifier design. It also provides excellent regulation.
The February 1991 issue of QEX included an article by Timothy P.
Hullick, PhD, W9QQ describes a 2KV, 1.5A switching unit weighing but 8
pounds. I also note that Astron has recently announced the availability
of a whole series of switching supplies having current capabilities of
up to 30 amps. (albiet these supplies are low voltage 13.8V units but
are price competitive with linear supplies)
Does anyone out there have any thoughts on the subject?
