I read somewhere that the 30L1 dvelopment 'happened' because some ham at Collins
knocked up an amplifer with 4 811A tubes in in a S line case as a 'home office
project', and it was seen at a time when something that size was needed for some
sort of government 'hurry' job.

After all, such things aren't unknown, although these days they get called
'COTS' - 'Commercial Off The Shelf', and are supposed to represent a great new
breakthrough in military procurement. Funny how the bureaucrats try to get
themselves credit for re-inventing what's been done before. After all, the HRO
was a commercial receiver in 1941, just as the Hallicrafters HT4 amateur
transmitter was - that became known as the BC610!
